Question about Pentair 1hp Whisperflo Pool Pump In - Ground

1 Answer

Good morning. Three years ago we had an inground 15,000 gallon salt water pool installed that included a Pentair pump. The last couple of mornings there is a terrrible whine occurring as the pump kicks on. Perhaps it's cavitating, perhaps the bearings have worn out I don't know. The information plate on the pump says it's a three-quarters horse power motor. It also says 1.27 SF and .95 SFHP and part number 7-186236-20. The plate doesn't say anything about Challenger, Intelliflow, SuperFlo, SuperMax, Waterfall, WhisperFlo. It might be time to replace the pump. It looks mostly like the SuperFlo or WhisperFlo, but not exactly. How can I figure out what the replacement pump is?

More than likly it's a square flange motor. If the noise is just starting when you take the pump apart you can check the impeller for problems but the most likley is a bearing going bad from a seal leak. If you remove the wires and take the motor with the back half of the pump to a pool store they can diagnose it for you and do the nessary repairs at the shop. Usually they will do this for a small bench fee or for just the price of the nessary parts.

Can a person use a hayward de ec40 for either above ground pools or inground pools? if not why?

Yes as long as you are sure to match the flow rate of the pump to the filter. The biggest limit will be the low maximum flow rate the EC40 has. It will clog up to fast if installed on a larger pool...inground pools are generally larger (more gallons of water) than above ground. The pumps are more important to match as far as using inground rated units for inground pools and above ground for inground. Filters only care about flow rate and overall volume of water to keep clean.

My pool pump has a red light on it that says "insufficient water flow". My pool turned green almost over night and I'm guessing this is why. Because it's green, my filter was filthy, I cleaned most of the...

What is the pump name an model...is it fresh water or salt....is it a sand or cartridge filter system...when did you last change the filters in the pump.. is it a pump heater system.... how big is your pool....you have not said enough to have anyone diagnose your problem... If the filter has a back flush system then by all means back flush it... you need to add shock to the water like 2-3 bags(1 pound each) also before you get too crazy bring a water sample down to a pool supply store and have the water analysed, they will tell you what to use to clear up the algea. Is the water level high enough in the skimmers to feed the pump or is it low and airating?
This is both a clarification and an answer to what is going on without having a slight bit of a clue what your pool is... could be a kiddie pool 300 gallons could be an olympic 50x40 size inground with 60,000 gallons of water???? You need to tell the story, it is like me asking you if you have the touch up paint for my living room in your garage....how would you know what color is my living room....what type of paint was used...etc. etc. etc.
Write back we will get to the source.

Pinnacle 1.5 hp inground pool pump making a lot of noise- it's only 2 years old and at the end of last season was much louder than it should be

Is pump moving water at a normal rate and pressure? If so, then you are in need of a bearing replacement. There is no specific lifetime for bearings or shaft seals, however two years would be at the lower end of scale. Have front and rear bearings replaced along with shaft seal.
