Question about Fantom Vacums FM741 Twister Bagless Upright Vacuum

1 Answer

I had my Fantom in for repairs (filter, light, belt, and cleaning) less than 7 months ago. Now its not picking up again and the brushes are not rotating. Does this mean another belt? At $69+ every 6 months, I'm thinking of getting another vacum. Any suggestions? Thanks, Judy

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm trying to avoid another repair bill by doing it myself. I had asked for the type of belt for my model and instructions for replacing it myself. Thanks, again, for your time.

The directions sound easy enough, but I'll need to wait until I get the belt to know if it works. Thanks for your prompt response. Judy

Sounds like you are going to need a new belt. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to have the edges of the roller clean because hair and carpet can wind up on the edges making it harder for the roller to turn.

My Hoover windtunnel brush is spinning but not picking up. I cleaned everything out, but still not picking up. There is another small set of 2 wheels that is not spinning. Could that be the problem?

If it's been over 6 months replace the belt or belts. stretch belts lose elasticity soon after being installed which is why they should be replaced frequently. Your belt may still spin the brushroll but not fast enough to clean carpets properly. After a few months it will pick up some of the sandy gritty soils but will force some of it down into the carpet fibers. Eventually it will become so stretched. It will not pick up hair and lint.

The type of bagless that has sharp turns in the hose and plastic parts are easy to become stopped up. You have to follow the path of the air flow to find the blockage.

I have a Fantom Thunder Vacuum. Missed placed my book. How do you replace the belt on the brush?

depending on your model, and I am going from memory on this one. I have not seen this model in a while.

1 headlight on the unit:
there are 2 screws on the back of the cover for the brush. Just above the wheels. Remove those two screws and the cover will come off.

2 headlights on the unit:
use a small screwdriver to remove the headlight lens covers, remove both of the light bulbs, and then the two screws are under the lights. there MAY be 2 more screws again at the back of the unit above the 2 rear wheels to remove as well. again the cover should come off and you will have full access to the belt/brush under there.

It makes a very loud noise and doesnt pick up much

When they make noise like that there is usually an issue with the drive system (the belt and roller brush). I would try cleaning off the roller brush and putting a new belt on. You can access the roller brush and belt by turning the vacuum over so the brush faces up. There is a cover plate over the roller brush which can be removed by removing the (4) phillips screws. with the cover plate off, you can remove the brush and old belt. clean the brush off really good and put it back with a new belt. This is normal maintenence for this model and should be done every 6 months.
You can get the replacement belt here:

Not sucking makeing a clogged noise

Bagless vacuums don't usually get clogged as easily as standard bag styles do. However, if you can disconnect the top half from the brush head section you should see a "neck" where the two meet, check there for a clog. Also check your filters, this is where loss of suction happens most. Dirty filters = Low Suction. I hope this helps

Brushes not working

Check the filter from the bottom, it has a red frame, pull it out far enough to clean it, if it is clooged, then the brushes won't spin. If it is clean, pull the brush block out, make sure the shaft that goes up into the turbine is not brokked off, if it is replace thebrush block. With the brush block out, turn on the machine and look up where the brush block goes, there is a square hole, if it is turning, then it is ok, if not, then the turbine is either clogged up or the turbine has gone bad.

The red light tells you that that there is a clog, either in the hose or down by the brush roll. The smell if it is rubber smelling, then it is the belt and maybe the brush roll. If it is an electrical smell, then probably the motor. But parts for these are always available, they went bankrupt several years ago and aren't in business anymore.

On my fantom cylone I use a 2 foot wire with small hook. Open bottom and push wire up the vacuum channels. There is also a channel that goes to the brush. Check for suction at hose. If none then your one of your channels going up are blocked. If you have suction at hose but none at floor brush then channel to floor brush is plugged.
