Nikon FM10 will only release shutter with cable

Hello Blair,
I too like old school camera, mine are the N2000, N6006, N80, and F100. First without film in the camera I would attempt to release the shutter. If it does then there is something going on with the film transfer causing a bind.

However, If it continues not to release the shutter I would put the FM10 on the shelf then go to KEH.com for another. Just now checked KEH.com, 2014-05-26, a FM10 in EX condition is $89, EX+ condition $99. That would be a much better move than repairing yours and less expensive.

Cordially

Will a nikon n2000 turn on without a lens and film?

The camera should operate perfectly fine without a lens. It should also operate perfectly fine without film (other than for not taking any pictures, of course).
I know this is stupid, but make sure the batteries are inserted in the proper direction. Then make sure the film advance mode selector around the shutter release button is not in the "L" position. L is for Lock, S is for single-frame, and C is for continuous.
If you need a manual you may download a copy here.

Which Nikon S.L.R. cameras can I use my 70/300mm AF-S Nikor and still maintain auto focus, it is currently on a D40x

Every one (assuming the camera supports autofocus in the first place, of course--old film Nikons didn't). The lens has an autofocus motor, so the camera doesn't need one.

Film Nikons supported autofocus starting with the N2000. (Actually, the F3 also had autofocus capabilities, but used a different system). All the digitals support autofocus.

Nikon n2000 has only one shutter speed.Film advance system working, and it auto advances the "dead film" after you close the back to get it ready for normal exposure, but it fires at a long 1 to 2 second...

Hi Dl, It sounds as though the camera should go in to Nikon for a CLA, (Clean Lube Adjust).
These cameras are worth $90 and less. As you can see it would cost more to have them fixed than to purchase a used one.
Look at www.keh.com, they are the largest used camera company in the USA if not the world. They are in the Atlanta Metro area.

Why is my pictures come out clear and about 1/2 inch dark on the left side

Hi Clairewater, When you say clear, are you saying that there is not any image on the film or it is a good image except for the left side half inch?
The N2000 flash sync is 1/125 of a second, are you shooting higher shutter speeds. If so the shutter begins to close before the flash can fire making a portion of the left side dark. Also, the flash may be overpowering the remaining section of the film blowing it out.
If this happens without flash I would suggest you contact Nikon for a CLA, (Clean Lube Adjust).
The following I have mentioned to others: These cameras are worth $90 and less. As you can see it would cost more to have them fixed than to purchase a used N2000.
Look at http://www.keh.com, they are the largest used camera company in the USA if not the world. They are in the Atlanta Metro area. Having purchased many items from them I am a very satisfied customer.

Nikon N2000 will not turn on to advance film. batteries ok

Make sure there is no corrosion on the battery contacts. If a battery corroded only a little it can foul the contacts enough so no power gets to the camera. Use a pencil eraser and scrub the contacts until shiney. This is the most common problem I have with it.

Film rewind crank stuck in up position nikon n2000

Move it a bit (some half circle)back and forth. The slot may be in wrong position related to the roll inside. It should click in when you get the slot in right angle.

There is a collar that is around the shutter release button. You lift the collar and turn it.
