Question about Zenith Televison & Video

1 Answer

I currently have a Zenith 50P3 (an LG 50pc3db-ue) that has HDMI handshake issues. I found the part number for the most recent firmware which is SAA30310102. It appears to be an EPROM chip. Does anyone know if the chip sits in a socket on the set, or whether the old chip must be de-soldered and the new chip soldered? Also they referred to service bulletin 0BPT20070205. I am unable to see the contents of this service bulletin. Can anybody tell me the contents?

I called the number above and spent over half an hour trying to explain to the LG people what an "HDMI handshake" was and they refused to tell me what was on the service bulletin. If you could find out that would be great, as you have already been very helpful unlike LG.

Please continue to search for me. LG Customer Service would not help.

  • Bill Street Oct 07, 2010

Sorry for the delay. I just forwarded you the response from LG.

    Thanks again for your help!

Thought I would drop a line to see if you had found anything else out. Thanks

  • Bill Street Oct 08, 2010

I was wondering if you have been able to turn anything up on television situation. Thanks!

  • Bill Street Oct 08, 2010

Sorry, I didn't realize I had more comments under the "see more comments" tab. LG has scheduled a tech for Monday. I hope he brings the firmware, but the CSR reps never understood there was a firmware update available

  • Bill Street Oct 18, 2010

The LG Tech came out and said that the bulletin number wouldn't come up for him on his system. He could not find a firmware update for my model. He said that the set being 3 years old probaby has to "resync" everytime it moves from input to input

  • Bill Street Nov 02, 2010

I still don't have this problem solved. The LG Tech never got back to me. He claimed the service bulletin number I got from LG does not exist. He didn't do anything except to demonstrate the problem I'm having. Have you had a chance to find any answer?

    Thanks

  • Bill Street Nov 02, 2010

It's not a hoax. LG can see the email on their end, but the tech thought that the email person may have mistyped the bulletin number. It's not under warranty. I feel certain a firmware update would fix it as it has trouble when fed a new signal through HDMI. It has to go through the initial negotiation for HDCP compliance again before it will show a picture, which means either turning the TV off

It is a chip that can be just removed and then replaced, should have no soldering involved.

Also it is locking me out of that service bulletin as well, I think they have something going on with their web server. I would just call Zenith and inquire directly in the mean time 877-993-6484 ... they will have the site fixed sometime soon I am sure, I will keep looking for you.

So far have only been able to tell for sure that that bulletin # refers to a required firmware update. They are being very secretive as to what the firmware update actually fixes.. The service bulletin as far as I can tell is just another way of saying firm revision update. It just looks like it takes care of certain bug fixes that were found in that model TV. Probably some way to exploit the HDCP (copy protection) mechanism built into the HDMI unit from what I am seeing. I am waiting for some inside sources at LG to tell me exactly what it refers to...

Have you scheduled the service already? It looks like they may replace the EEPROM for free or at least flash it with a new firmware upgrade....

Ya those CSR reps are just people in a call center dealing with dozes of manufacturers models, they don't know much about them.

    Keep me posted

As far as I can tell there is no mention of that service bulletin anywhere either. I wonder if that was some kind of hoax email you received? Is your unit still under warranty? Regardless of the bulletin or otherwise - they should be able to fix your unit for you...

Power supply is the big board at the top middle, but a short on any board could do what you are describing, You need a Digital volt meter to trobleshoot further, look for popped or bulged capacitors or shorted components before purchasing more boards. Also look at Y-sus, Y Drivers (big board on the left 2 skinny boards.

This is most likely a problem with what's called "HDMI handshake." It's a silly protection scheme called HDCP that is meant to keep people from copying content. The best thing to do is unplug everything, then turn on things in this order: receiver>projector>sources (directv, Bluray). If that does not work, check for firmware updates for the receiver or projector.

Very noisy fan on a Zenith 50" Plasma (Model 50PC3DB-UE). Should I replace the power supply or just a fan?

if it has only one fan, replace that but look to see if fan dusty or not.

I have seen ones with two identical fans and one made noise and the other did not, swapped them and then knew for sure which was the bad one, in that case better to replace both fans at same time.

HDCP is the "handshake" protocol used by the Xbox to communicate via HDMI to your TV. The optical cable wouldn't have anything to do with this error. So far the only solution that's been found to this issue is to ensure that the HDMI cable is properly plugged in and power off/on both devices and see if the handshake is restored. If this doesn't work you may need a new HDMI cable.

Hi there, this tends to be a problem with the HDMI handshake that takes place between the console and the TV. Next time it starts blinking just unplug the HDMI cable (while everything is still on and running) and plug it back in. The HD handshake should be performed automatically by console and TV and hopefully it should stop doing it. You may have to do this each time you use the console, it all depends on whether your TV "remembers" the handshake.

Hope this helps

I have a z50p3 I tried to hook a samsung 1600

Sorry, man I have the same problem, with the same tv and player. Did you ever get a solution? LG Service Tech came out and his LG bluray player worked, whereas my Samsung didn't hooked to the TV. (It would spordically work going thru my HK254 AVR.)

He said either 1) the Samsung player was defaulting to a format that the Zenith being 3 years old could not decode (eg. 1080P) or that I might need to change inputs several times to get it to sync up or 3) by an LG Bluray player.

He said the Zenith was old and that newer sets are built with circuitry to help navigate the handshake easier. He couldn't find any service bulletins on it, and the one I got from LG he said didn't exist.
