Question about Dewalt DC920KA Heavy Duty Xrp 18V Cordless Drill/Driver

1 Answer

Transmission problem i have had the trans compleatly torn down and found no worn gears at all and reassembled it according to the exploded veiw sheet where i buy parts from. Could it possibly be the gears in the clutch setting itself there is also a spring i think could have broken and thus preventing it from getting enough tension?

Chuck will only turn side to side after repair of gears box after

I need more information to answer your problem.
The chuck normally has movement turning because of the clutch gear.
It is possible if you had a gear strip or spindle break that there are pieces of metal in the grease that have jammed your new gears. I would recommend tearing down completely, remove all the grease, thoroughly clean gearcase, regrease & reassemble.

Wher do pin bearings go into the transmission of a dewalt 18v cordless drill

if its like my DC925,you have to remove front of trans. toward chuck! its a plastic piece with a s.s. flat spring washer. if washer falls out install from bottom of plastic when removed from trans. bearings stand in gear grooves. make sure if nut falls out match 1 with 1!

I know there is a stripped gear in the gear housing, how do I disassemble gears, and where do I get replacement gear

You can go to a parts site like, do a model number search and you'll get a great breakdown of your tool. You can get the parts that are still availabel on the same site or find the part number and do web searches to see if there are better places to buy. As far as taking it apart, removing the three screws on the front of the head will let you pull the transmission off the motor housing. Be sure to grease everything up well when reassembling.

Drill fell and broke now trying to put it back together gears and all, require help

Unfortunately on that model they do not service any of the transmission parts separately so there is no exploded view. Here is the parts diagram. You may end up having to buy a new trans assembly.

Makita 8444d second and third gears sound noisy and do not engage

I had the same problem on my 8444, it was out of warranty (just over 2 years old) so I stripped it and found the plastic gear selector ring worn out. Was livid at this as these drills are marketed on the strength of the "all metal" MXT gearbox! Makita UK, to their credit, sent me a replacement gearbox free of charge when I pointed this out to them.

A year on and the replacement gearbox has now started doing the same in 3rd (high) gear. Doubt I can get another free 'box out of Makita (they would probably say I fitted it incorrectly) so am looking at buying just the drill body, which comes out at around £60 and will work with my existing batteries. Just not sure if I would trust the replacement not to fail, but a similarly powerful drill with 2 batteries would cost me wel over £200.

I have 3 of these and all of them have a problem after a while that they slip the clutch even when it is selected to the drill position, can the clutch be adjusted?

I just took mine apart and it appears that you have to replace the entire transmission. It is an easy job and the part is about $34 much cheaper than a new drill. Really, it is one third the price of a battery. Just take the 4 screws out that hold the metal case to the plastic clamshells, slide the front of the drill off, pull the transmission out of the rear of the drill put the plastic piece with the gear indicator on the new trans, if needed, slide the new trans into place, spin the motor if needed to get the output to line up with the planetary gears, slide the front of the drill back into place, rotate the chuck to align the shaft  with the transmission output, put the 4 screws back in, enjoy.

Might want to replace the brushes while you are in there as well. I am going to consider this the dewalt version of an oil change

Milwaukee cordless drill 14.4 gears

usually you would remove the chuck first under my name in the profile section is the tip for chuck removal, it is a standard thread probably 1/2-13. As far as the gears go try the site and type in your model number for a parts explosion. Let me know if I can help further
