If you go to this URL:
http://www.ereplacementparts.com/eureka-8853avz-upright-vacuum-parts-c-108750_108773_109342.html
you will see that item #25 is listed as a circuit protector. You can locate it on the exploded view drawing as to where it is on the unit. This is what you want to find and see if you can reset it.
If you find my solution to be helpful, I would appreciate a Thumbs Up.

BTW, you did not list a model number, so I chose the 8853 to represent the unit you have.
Another search can be done at the beginning of the URL for the actual unit you have.

I have a Eureka Capture and it works fine for 5 minutes then I smell some burning. Is this the belt?

It could be, open up the cover (there are two screws on the top) and then check the belt, and check the brush to see if anything is rubbing on the belt. If the belt seems fine then your problem is somewhere else.

Eureka capture model 8803 type AVV...runs for 10 minutes then stops. will not re-start for a long time.

This could be a few issues. First it could be the thremel swith located inside, or it could be the carbon brushes also located inside. If you are a do it yourselfer you can purchess the carbon brushes from any vacuum repair shop. The thermal switch should be tested before replacing "thus- you shoud have a local repair shop look at" I would find one that offers free estimates so they can diog. the problem. then buy the part and start the fun part. Saving big $$$$$$

Eureka Boss - Belt is not broke but brush will not turn. I have already turned it over - checked belt - and pushed the reset button.

The belt may look fine but they can still be stretched or worn and it won' turn the brush. Try changing the belt and see what it does. You can get Eureka belts here:

Generic problem for all Vacuums
Vacuum
how to replace broken switch button?

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
I would need more information on the brand name such as Hoover, Eureka, Kirby etc., to answer the question – we need more information as to what type of switch button.

Eureka power failure

The windings have a temperature sensor that "usually" resets when it detects an over heating problem. The other alternative is a light bulb in series with the motor that has popped, this will stop the motor from running.
I'd bet on the thermostat in series with the windings first though, can be replaced if you can get the cleaner apart.
