Hi.
If the picture becomes all distorted after a while, either with colors not matching, or deformed image with bands on sides or up and down of picture, then you need to replace the power amp ICs in the convergence board. This is quite a delicate job and it is done desoldering old ICs and soldering new ones in the convergence board. More components like resistors and capacitors in convergence board may need replacement. The power supply must also be tested, as sometimes a PSU problem may cause a similar effect (if colors are not matching is convergence by the way).
Cost to replace convergence ICs starts at about $200. It can go up to $300/350 if there are further problem. To get a quote and to locate an authorized technician in your area contact Mitsubishi Support.
Here part list. Most parts are not in stock, but you get parts numbers:Mitsubishi WS-65813 Parts List.
Regards.
Ginko.
Image is probably distorted because the convergence ICs are gone. The picture is shutting off when the two integrated circuits that keep the three red green blue colors matched fail completely. The video signal is aligned through convergence ICs, when they heat up and fail completely the picture goes off.
Here an interesting page showing you the repair.
Here examples of early stage convergence problems.
Re:"The examples you show of early convergance problems are nothing close to
what I have.
Also the off on and picture and occasional colored fuzz only happens
intermittently?
Once I power off and back on the picture comes back on. If it was
heating up it should not come back on so fast I would think."
Heating up means that the components are charged when power pass by. Convergence at an early stage is like that. If problem is not convergence, then it is PSU or ballast. In some case you can have problems that reset when you turn off concerning main controller board.
If you really think it is not convergence, then take a picture of the raster and upload here using the upload picture button. Picture may be too big, in that case use a service like thishttp://tinypic.com/
I told you that the repair is likely below $400 because faults that go over that price are panel, light engine and dmd board problems. From your description it does not sound like this parts are involved. Faults concerning this parts do not go temporarily away by turning off.
We call a component , a wire or a component "hot" when there is power passing through the part.
Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Why is the picture shutting off? When there is visability it is not a recogizable picture just wavey colors that are distorted that go sideways.
The examples you show of early convergance problems are nothing close to what I have.
