    1) If you have a Floppy Drive, make sure there isn't a disk in it. 2) How do you know it's a disk boot failure? Is it stated?

Have you checked your bios to see what the system is configured to boot from first? Make sure your hard drive is the first boot device in the list.

After (successful) restoration of desktop 838GM, boot-up get stuck at black screen with message that "NTLDR is compressed, press ctrl alt del to restart". When I do the ctrl alt del, computer reboots but...

The startup files are corrupted. You need to put the windows disk in the DVD and make the computer boot off that when it starts up. Booting off the DVD may need to be set in the BIOS if the machine does not do it automatically.
When the window comes up you select install windows.
Second option is repair my computer. Then follow the prompts.

Gateway/vista black screen with no ctrl+alt+del but a nice cursor

Try this, before it boots up and just after in posts press F8, it should bring up a page where you can choose your boot option, choose "Safe Mode", if the computer does boot to safe mode there are a few steps you can do to remedy this.

First goto my computer, c:drive/windows and scroll down to a folder called prefetch open the folder, highlight everything in that folder by left clicking once on one of the icons and holding control(ctrl) then pressing A once everything is highlighted hold down the shift key and press delete, everything should now be gone, exit out of all the windows do a disk clean up, my computer right click on c:drive (your main drive) and click on disk cleanup tick all boxes and then click ok to start deleting the temp files. once finished reboot mechines and leave it to boot up. if you still are having problems or it wont boot up into safe mode post back. cheers.

Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart error

Is it a black screen right when you boot your computer? If so this could be a fatal disk error and the harddrive has crashed.

There is no easy fix other than to replace the harddrive.

The NLTDR file is missing ot corrupted. Try your recovery disk to fix the problem. If this doesn't work as a last resort, re-install Windows.

Try reinstalling the OS with your restore disks. It might be that you have HDD failure in which case you would need to replace the HDD.

My young son has a compaq 6720s. I don't know what he has done but it comes up "bootmgr is missing". I don't have a recovery disk for it. What's the nbest thinh I can do to fix it?

BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" message, in menacing white font on black screen. So you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del only to get the same message again, and again, and again, in an infinite, terrible loop. You clutch your chest and rock back and forth and froth at the mouth for awhile. Then you straighten up, take a deep breath, and grab the Vista installation DVD.
See, if your PC's boot disk got bumped out of wack, you can often fix it right back up using the original Vista installation disk, which comes with a pretty extensive System Recovery Tool that's got lots of options (see screengrab). Set your computer to boot from DVD (using the Boot setting in the BIOS), insert the disc and restart. Vista will prompt you for language and keyboard layout options, then ask if you want to reinstall Vista or repair your installation. You want Repair. From there Vista's System Recovery Tool will take over, and lead you down the road to happy vistages again.
If that fails? Try the free GParted CD
