Question about Western Digital Caviar WD2500BB 250 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Installing a secondary HDD

I installed a WD 2500js as a secondary drive in my HP Compact 1750NX with XP SP2.... I had purchased this drive for my son but he did not need it and it set here for months so I decided to intall it in my PC..... I can see the WD drive in CMOS and see it in the device manager (all is working properly) but can not see it in "my computer" or access it. I would think in may need to be formatted but if I can not see it I can not format the drive

USB port not working

You can purchase another identical External Drive and swap the HDD inside it to recover your data or simply install the removed drive into a Desktop computer as a secondary drive to recover if the problem is actually the USB port.

What error-message(s) do you get?

Access http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
and download Windows XP Service Pack 3,
and install it.

You do *NOT* need to install SP2 before installing SP3.

there are few thing you ahve to keep in mind

there are two type of hard disk
1. IDE
2. SATA

As per your hdd capacity it should of IDE type.

Now there are two IDE slots on motherboard. One is Primary and other is Secondary

You can fix two hdd with one IDE Slot that mean you can fix up upto faour IDE hdd at a time

Now again there are Primary master and Primary Slave

and

Secondary Master and Secondary Slave

Now You have to examine what was the location of previous hdd
1 Primary Master
2 Primary Slave
3 Secondary Master
4 Secondary Slave.

Now you have to make a HDD master or Slave.

just in between data cable connector and power cable connector there is a jumper. that specify the master or slave. do reply me if it works well thanks

I installed a new WD Cavier 500 Gb hasr drive ot

Your problem could be that the hard disk is not ACTIVE.
Boot up with a DOS disk (floppy or CD or USB) and run FDISK, select 4 to Display Partition Info. If the C drive does not have A under Status then press ESC and select 2 to Set active partition and then set Partition C to active.

My hdd does not get detected

I too had a similar problem with my laptop. My laptop had a virus attack and somehow I managed to remove all the viruses. However there was one persistent problem which was while booting, My documents used to open automatically. Hence I wanted to repair the Windows XP SP2 and so I went to BIOS and changed the settings to boot from CDROM. While booting the installation CD from CDROM, suddenly I get a message: Hard disk not found! This was nightmare. Then I got this solution:
My laptop was new and the HDD was connected to motherboard with SATA, and we need SATA drivers before installing OS. In the likely event of not getting this driver, we could still solve this problem by confusing the computer. Go to BIOS settings and change the SATA to IDE or any other. Then restart the computer. The HDD now can be seen and you can repair or reinstall the Windows XP SP2.

SMART failure predicted on hard disk 0:

There is a big problem with newer conponents and Win XP versions prior to SP2. Especially with newer motherboards.

You have to make a bootable SP2 disk if you don't already have one. To do this use the slipstream proceedure specified on the Ms website. Many other websites describe the process with easier language.

Slipstreaming is a common practice now. Essentially, you copy your original install disk to the c: drive then download SP2 to C: drive then download the slipstream utility from MS. Running the slipstream utility then inserts the proper drivers (ide and HD drivers too) into the licensed copy you have. You then create a bootable disk from the slipstreamed files you have.

This approach is resolving alot of blue STOP errors and SMART errors.

ALSO, you want to make sure you are installing any drivers provided by the MB manufacturer AND Drive maker.

Good Luck

Dell Dimension 5000

you problem is most likely that your bios is out of date. download the latest bios updates for your motherboard and then when you install windows format you HDD with the ntfs system (using the long formatt system not the quick format). Then you should install the bios update. then your mboard shoud no longer have the problem of recognising your large capacity HDD. thanks
