Hello,

What I suspect that is wrong with your laptop is that a liquid

been poured on your keyboard, maybe mistakenly, or your system

was used in a moist environment.

What I would therefore advise you to do is that, try to open your

PC from the front, at the place where you have your power on

button panel, then trace the screws that holds you keyboard at the

back and unscrew them. Actually it is very easy if you can do it by

yourself, but if you can't, just get a PC technician to do it for you.

After you have done this, dry the keyboard in a proper

environment...preferably Sun-Dry. then clean it properly and

replace it.

If after this it stills malfunctions, then my best advise to you is that

you should just get another replacement keyboard.

They are always very cheap, especially the good, fairly used ones

that will still work perfectly for you.

Hope this solves the problem.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem and let me know how it

goes

Thanks for using fixya.

Hi,
This may be caused by dirt. You need to clean your keyboard.
- A quick first step is to turn your machine upside down with the keyboard on your palm
- Then bang your palm against the keyboard. This will help free up some dirt

When I hit any key, it throws in a bunch of asterisks

Could be either a short in the Keyboard or it is not USB adapter compatible, some mice are like this. Plug it into a computer with PS2 port and see if it still malfunctions, if it does then the keyboard has a short, if not, it is incompatible with a USB adapter. Keyboards send two codes whenever a key is pressed, one for the key itself and one to let the computer know it the Shift/Ctrl/Alt keys are being pressed.

I have a hp laptop and when ever i press the number five and six key it is not working mcan anyone help plz

you usually find, that setting the keyboard is done at first install of operating system.if you do not choose your correct country and keyboard layout you could find malfunction of the keyboard.
The other scenario could be the keys themselves have begun to malfunction, the first option will require a reinstall of your operating system and the correct options chosen at this stage.

On my laptop alphabet keys uiojkl and m have numbers on them i dont know what i pressed but whenever i use the keyboard now it will only type the numerals that are on those keys instead of the letters...

please check for a the ( Fn) key which is found next to the left side ctrl marked by a blue colour. cleck to see if this is jammed as only by holding the fn key down will the alphabets change to numerical. If the fault is persisting again open your keyboards settings and check for default settings. Also try to reinstall the drivers or else restore you computer to an earlier good restore point by clicking on control panel, select back up /restore. I hope this clears your fault. Good day.

Some keys on my laptop dont work

Trying a desktop keyboard is useful for determining if it is a keyboard problem or a software problem. This usualy happens if some liquid has gotten into the keyboard, but you said thats not possible. Try to boot into bios, the first screen that pops up when you boot, on a toshiba it is usually pressing F1 or Del. then if your Arrow keys don't work there, you need a new keyboard.

Keyboard keys L/G/R acting weird

It sounds like the Windows is registering the "Windows Key" as being in the "Pressed" position. This is the key between control and alt on the left side of the keyboard. Press it a few times and see if that helps. If it does not it sounds like that key or the keyboard may need replacement.

Help please tell me why my keys will not work on my laptop.

Try using an external USB desktop keyboard (or a PS2 keyboard, if you have a PS2 jack on the laptop).

If everything works then, your laptop keyboard is malfunctioning. This is usually due to one of three causes:

1. One key is stuck in the "down" or "depressed" position (collapsed/dented silicone cup beneath, or damaged flex legs under key). Look at the keyboard from the side, to see f any key looks lower than the rest (or higher than the rest) Be careful taking it apart to clean and reassemble.

2. Bad ribbon connector, torn, or merely corroded/oxidized keyboard cable connector. This requires opening the laptop to fix. Usually 2-3 screws under laptop labeled as keyboard, allow it to be pried off. Release the cable LOCK, and remove the thin ribbon cable. Reinsert it 5-6 times to clean off contacts, and LOCK the jack again once you are sure it is all snug. If the ribbon was TORN, you will need a new one. Good luck, not easy to find on old laptops.

3. Worst scenario... someone spilled coke (the worst) or beer/beverage inside the keyboard. This eats up the printed oxide connectors, and this cannot be repaired. you will need a new keyboard assembly.. Use a magnifying glass to look between keys, to see if there is stickey, gooey material there. This would be the bad news indicator for number 3.

Malfunctioning keyboard Sony Vaio PCG K415S

Ebay or somewhere similar is your best bet for getting a 'used' and therefore much cheaper replacement. Just type in the make/model of your machine..

Most Keyboards are pretty easy to replace and if your not sure how to do it, run a search on the web or post on here with your specific model etc. If its put together anything like my Sony all you have to do is remove a bit of trim above the keyboard (carefully) and there are 4/6 screws holding the keyboard in place. Remove these and the keyboard just slides out. Then it's just a matter of disconnecting the ribbon and reversing the order to put it all back together.

Good luck, J
