My Ryobi gas trimmer is leaking fuel around the return line where it enteres the fuel tank

My Ryobi gas trimmer is leaking fuel around the gas return line. The return line enters the fuel tank through a small hole. There isn't a nipple or plug to tighten it on.

The older Ryobi gas trimmers had the fuel return line go through a hole in the bottom of the fuel tank. The outside dimension of the fuel line was supposed to create a snug fit to prevent any fuel leaks. However, even after I replaced my fuel lines, I was still getting a fuel leak. My solution was to insert a small metal tube in the fuel return line to expand the fuel hose to get the snug fit to prevent any leaks. My fuel hose has a 3/32" inside diameter and a 3/16" outside diameter. I found that an electrical **** splice connector had the proper diameter metal tube that I was looking for. A **** splice connector joins two wires in a straight line. Just go to the electrical section of any hardware store and purchase the 18-22 gauge connector (usually has a red plastic covering). I used a razor blade (utility knife) to cut the red plastic covering off to get to the metal tube inside. The technique I used was with the fuel tank empty I disconnected the fuel return line from the primer bulb nipple. Then I pushed the fuel return line further into the fuel tank to have the end come out of the gas cap opening. Note: Be careful not to pull the fuel line too far out of the gas cap opening since it is impossible to thread it back through the small fuel return line hole from inside the fuel tank. Tip: I used a pair of locking vise grips to keep the end of the fuel line that attaches to the primer bulb from getting pulled into the fuel tank. Then I used two-stroke oil and lubricated the metal tube from the **** splice connector and inserted it into the end of the fuel line. After the metal tube was inserted into the fuel line, I pulled the fuel line back down into the fuel tank. A combination of pulling on the fuel line with one hand while using a finger on the other hand to push on the end of the fuel line inside the fuel tank helped guide the fuel return line back through the fuel return line hole. When I saw about 1/8" of the metal tubing enhanced fuel line sticking out of the bottom of the fuel tank, I stopped pulling. Then I reconnected the other end of the fuel line back onto the primer bulb nipple. This created a really snug fit and stopped my fuel leak. Hope this helps you!!

The omitted word in my explanation (****) is but (with two T's). FixYa's computer must have recognized it as a swear word and substituted asteriks in its place.

If the hose is loose on the nipple try a small hose clamp to fix it. As long as there is no crack outside it, your tank is ok.

Or you can replace the return line. I believe this is a known issue for some Ryobi models.
Be careful to note which line comes from where on the primer bulb.

For the time being use a cello tape to wrap around the leak tightly.
Now see if it is the return pipe that is leaking or the entrance to the fuel tank. In any case you must change the whole pipe from the engine to the gas tank to be on the safe side.

How to replace fuel lines on model725r ryobiweed wacker

There are usually only two fuel lines on a Ryobi motor, a supply and a return line. The supply line is a long one and is designed to move around the tank as the unit is moved around, some hafe a weight with a filter on in the tank. The other line is shorter and just protrudes into the tank, this is the return line. The piping you fit should be the special silicon rubber pipes as these are fuel proof, normal plastic pipes become hard and do not move around in the tank, and eventually crack or disintergrate. Replace the new pipes the same as you remove the old ones, if you go wrong, just change the pipes around on the carb, you will see if you are sucking air with the primer bulb.

I need a diagram for the fuel lines on a ryobi 31cc trimmer plus 15" from the fuel tank thru the primmer bulb to the carb for both lines

Don't quite understand your dilemma... there are only two fuel lines which go from the tank to the carburetor.....if looking at the engine from the back, the fuel line on the left is the intake line and the one on the right is the fuel return line....on the back of the carb are two fuel line brass inserts...they are inlet on left and return on the right....hope this helps ;-D

Ryobi 700r gas trimmer. Leaking fuel from the fuel return line...what is the best way to fix this?...seems to be leaking where the tube goes up into the fuel tank. thanks.

There is no nipple. The fuel line is just pushed through and holds itself tight against the hole in the tank.

This is the return line from the primer bulb, right?

Just replace the line and you should be fine. I think that some of these Ryobi lines are 3/16 OD and 3/32 ID, but I just picked up a Ryobi fuel line kit at Home Depot today, and the black line seems to fit nicely here. (My trimmer still won't start, but at least it doesn't leak gas any more.) Be careful to note which line comes from where on the orimer bulb.

Gas line cracked and nipple fell back into tank ..how do I remove gas tank to replace gas line and nipple????..ryobi 725r trimmer

Empty the tank by dumping into a can or something. Shake the trimmer around until the "nipple" falls out. Get a replacement fuel line and follow their instructions. When yoou put the tube back into the tank, have something that you can guide the line through the hole with. I used a small hex wrench. If you cut the tip of the tube at a sharp taper, it will be much easier to start through the hole. You might think of replacing the return line as well. You should not have to remove the tank if you expose the carb and remove the air filter...Good luck...Lee

How far does the return gas line on a ryobi string trimmer extend

There is supposed to be a barb fitting with a flange on top of it that is on the end of the hose, inside the tank. If you do not have that barb in place the gas will start to leak out of the tank in a short time. Barb fitting is designed to have hose stick up about 3/16" into the tank when the hose is properly installed. You put the new hose on the fitting, thread the other end of the hose through the fill opening of the tank and out the hole in the bottom. Pull hose through until barb comes through the hole in the tank and the flange is flush with the inside bottom of the tank. There is supposed to be a plastic ring that fits over the bulge in the hose/barb at the bottom of the tank on the outside. Serves as a retainer for the fitting.

There is a little white ring that goes over the line and into the opening on the tank. This is what seals the line so the gas won't leak out. They are about $1.00 at any small engine service shop.

Ryobi 768r fuel line

Line from tank with the filter on it is the supply line and goes to the carb inlet fitting. This is typically on the "bottom" of the carb (with the tank being up) and will usually have a fitting with barbs or a bulge on it to ensure a tight fit. The other fitting on the carb is the return line and is usually a straight tube fitting with no barbs. That line goes the suction side of the primer bulb. The third line goes from the outlet of the primer bulb to the return barb fitting in the bottom of the tank. Fittings have to be removed from tank to properly install the new hoses on them. Remove retainer ring on outide of tank and push fittings into tank, then shake out of the fill opening. More details on replacing hoses are listed in another post about Repairing Ryobi trimmer.
