Please post the make and model along with any action that occurs when you attempt to turn on the set. For example, does the standby light blink? If so, how many times? With that info we should be able to give you some options.
Thanks,
Dan

We have a 48 inch Philips LCD TV. We've had it approximately 14 months. The picture started going out but we still had sound. If you turned it off it would come back on. Then the other night it...

The power supply module or the backlights inverter board may have burnt out. Shop repair will run you $150 and up plus parts.
14 months old is really bad, I would contact Philips to see if they willing to repair it under warranty, you may not be the only one with this model with early failure.

I have a 52" samsung that is 14 months old. for some reason it is out of sync. the picture is too wide and does not fit cable shows or dvd's properly onto the screen. tried different picture size settings...

FCC says it only has to display a picture, with 16 formats it tough to get it to ever fit right, use 16x9 or full on TV remote , then 16x9, stretch 1080i on cable box

There could be two possible failures:
1. The backlights are defective (not a common failure for a 14 months old LCD) or the backlights driver/inverter is defective.
2. Power supply failure(very common failure on LCDs) will cause the symptoms you described.

This is usually a convergence problem.. Could you update this with the model number please. That will allow me to give you some specifics about what could be wrong and how to fix it.
