The SD card has a folder named media, there is a sub-folder called audio, and subfolder to that is another called notifications. I believe you can also create ringtones and alarm subfolders below audio as well.
In the notifications folder place your new message tone. To select the tone, choose settings, sound & display,Notification ringtone and pick your new sound.
Hello and Welcome to FixYa!
It is easy using the Setting menu, follow this;
Then Sound Profiles
Select Normal (Unless you are using a different one)
At the top right corner, hit the Drop Down Arrow
Then Select the message alert tone.
You will see the default 4 tones here, if you have download you own then click Sounds, in the lower right hand corner.
Select the Folder, your Ringtones are in.
Select the ringtone you want
Hit Select, Press Save. Done!
Note: To change the volume you will see the volume option in the same drop down menu where you selected Message, in the 5th step.
I hope you will have a clear picture now.

If you want to set an mp3 or "Custom" tone for your "Notifications" you can dowload an app or...
Connect your X10 to your computer. Pull down the usb notification in top left of screen and mount sd card.
Then go into your phone menu via "My Computer" and either go into media/audio/notifications or create the folders yourself. Remember they must be lower case letters.
Then all you have to do is copy your tone into the "notifications" folder disconnect your phone from your pc and go into "Settings" "Sound and Display" "Notification ringtone" and it should now be in your list with the preset standard tones.
Go to Profiles, and choose a Customized Profile. Rename it to whatever you prefer. In this profile you can select your ring tone, message tone, volume, etc. I only had to do this once, and everything worked perfectly!
Even though the phones profile is not set to silent. the volume on the standard profile could be switched off ! go into the profile settings to check that the volume for your current profile is switched on and up. if the problem persists, seek help from Sony Ericsson And/or your Mobile Phone Carrier
As regards the ringtones, have you just put the volume down, as I did this unintentionally and couldn't hear the ringtones until my son turned the volume back up for me - by pressing the up button while ringtone is playing.
You CAN set a song as your text alert tone. Here are the steps: 1- Go to: Settings> Profiles> 2- Select your options (e.g. normal, vibrate and ring, etc....) 3- select Options> Customize (2)> 4- Highlight "Message Sound" and select Options> Customize (2), 5- Then browse to the folder your song or sound is in (e.g. audio) and select the file you want to use and save it.
I noticed that the songs have to be under 30 seconds to use as any type of alert tone for calls or texts.
