Question about D-Link Computers & Internet

Open Question

I bought a new Dlink router, a DSL 2642B, I am using a brand new clean install of Vista and have set the router up using the install CD.. I am getting repeated and seemingly random disconnects from the internet, the router shows my PC on the DHCP client list and shows having a perfectly fine WAN connection to my ISP, but for some reason appears unable to connect the two together, i have tried updating the firmware on the router to no avail and have even tried formatting and reinstalling windows, which also has not helped any, I have also attempted disabling all security software, which has not helped. I am certain none of the hardware has been set up incorrectly. If you require more information, please do not hesitate to contact me 24/7 on the reply e-mail address.

SOURCE: Router doesn't obtain WAN IP address (DHCP)

you can hook the router up and go into the settings by when it is hooked up to your computer, type in http://192.168.0.1 and the password is usually user or admin. the password is usually password, unless it was changed. you may be able to change settings to fix this problem through that GUI

SOURCE: DSL connection not being shared by Linksys RV042 Dual Wan router

Looks like your "modem" is actually a gateway, as is common with DSL devices. It's acting like a modem and a router. So you're actually connecting a router to your RV42. You could get this to work a couple ways.
1. Leave the modem acting like a router and configure the WAN connection on the RV42 as a static IP, and use the IP of the modem. You may also be able to use "obtain IP automatically" in the WAN connection. This way, the modem stores your PPOE information and just forwards the traffic to the RV42. Any devices behind the RV42 won't know the difference.
2. Configure the modem as just a modem (no routing). Your ISP should be able to talk you through this, but in the modem configuration you can look for what's usually called "bridged mode." Then you would enter the PPOE information in the RV42. This is my preferred method.

Do I need the power cord to my D-Link router to set up my computer?

From the port marked "Wan" on the back of the D-Link, install a lan cable to the cable/dsl modem.

Insert the lan cable from Dlink port labeled "1" to the PC.

The Dlink, cable/DSL modem, and PC should all be powered on.

I believe the router comes with a CD/DVD. Insert this into the PC to set up the router.

Be sure to read through your Dlink manual for additional instructions.

I have bought a wireless ADSL modem, Dlink DSL 2640u , How can I install and use it for another laptop? I want to use it without wire. Thanks

all wireless devices must be allowed in the router by either MAC address or by name. This is accomplished by logging into to the router and setting up the device in with the wireless setup feature in your router. The router will not allow the device to connect without permissions.

Setting up a small network using DSL and a DLink router

1.) The setup needs changing
2.) first off the dss-24 is a network switch not a router
3.) all of your pc equipment should be pluged into that device.
4.) chose one port as an uplink to your att modem
I think your problem is that the new modem is only giving out one ip address. So what ever first pc is turned on that is the one that grabs the address.
5.) you will most likly need a router to take the one ip address assigned via att then dole out additional ones. Remember the dss-24 is not a router. It simply connects everyone together. Each device still needs an ip address given from somewhere. Your old cable modem probibly did that but your new att dsl most likly does not.hence the new router will do that.....
to set it up do the following
2.) Find out the ip setup needed for your dsl service
A.) gateway ip
B.) primary & secondary dns server ip`s
C.) subnet mask
3.) get into the setup of your new router and then plugg in
all of these values using a fixed if address in the router
4.) connect routers wan port to one of the modems port. u may have to use a cross cable or straight look at the link lites to find out if they are talking to each other
5.) make sure that the routers lan side is setup for DHCP
6.) connect one lan port off the router to an uplink
of the dss-24. Then reboot everything
7.) viola it should all work internet on evey machine and file sharring.

How do I intall the dlink router if I dont have a cd drive My computer is a dell inspirion and is runs on vista

hello, here is what you need to do: if have a pc connected to high speed modem directly you will unplug the network cable from the back of your pc/laptop and that end will then go in to "WAN" port on the new dlink router.
second, you take another wire and plug one end in your pc/laptop and the other end in one of the 4 lan ports in the back of your new dlink.
restart everything in the following order at 30 seconds duration:- first the cable/DSl modem, then dlink, then your pc/laptop.
once everything is up open up internet browser and test connectivity.
at this point you should have internet up and running but you need to configure you router and wireless etc.
from your browser in address bar type in http://192.168.0.1 and hit enter that will bring you router login prompt : default user name is "admin" and password is left blank and hit enter, you are now in router to configure options as you please.
I would strongly recommend changing your router password administration and if you plan on using wireless, setup SSID, encryption, network key on wireless. NEVER LEAVE IT OPEN.

Hope this helps
let me know if you have any questions
