Surely the monitor lets you change it's 'standby' settings so that it doesn't show that; or change your computer's power savings modes not to include standby?

I am having problem with a Samsung 712n monitor that remains black when the PC is booted up. The PC drives other monitors all right, so the trouble is not the PC. The buttons on the front of the monitor...

The monitor should be replaced, by your description there is more than one issue, it has a screen display problem and several buttons are not responding to any commands, and the monitor is six years old. The cost to repair would not be justified, and a new replacement would be cheaper.

I have a SyncMaster 901b monitor & there are several coloured vertical lines down the right hand of the screen which I cannot remove.

I would need to see some images of the monitor to be sure but this either sounds like a faulty port in either the PC or Monitor, a faulty cable, or the panel in the monitor itsself.
Try swaping the monitor for a one that definatley works, if that works, its the monitor, if not, try swapping the cable, if the problem is still there try updating your graphics driver, if still no differnce, your PC is broken.

Normal screen is white background, but lately I am getting a blue tint that clears up sometimes and sometimes not. Please advise

Try hooking up another knowng working monitor to the computer and see if the blue tint comes back intermittently.

If it still comes up then you know your video card is the culprit. If the blue tint goes away then you know the original monitor is bad.

Letter size

In your display properties, if using Windows, you can change the font dpi. It's usually set at a default of 96dpi & iy allows you to either change to 120dpi or a custom size if you need bigger than 120. Hope this helps.
