Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

My 320GB WD Hardrive keeps blinking. It is connected via usb 2.0 into my laptop (windows7). Computer Management says it's working properly and it displays all the folders but when I want to open the folder, it pops up with this message: "The request could not be performed becasue of an I/O device error."

Hi,

It seems that your Harddrive has problems with internal Micro USB connector. WD, Transcend and Seagate brands are having such kind of problems.

Try to adjust the micro usb cable in such a way that your data transfer or ongoing activity will not hamper. Else to have perfect solution on your problem, backup complete data from the HDD and hand-over the HDD to the nearest WD technical department.

They may diagnose the issue and if not resolvable, will handover new WD Harddrive.

Thanks,
Amar

Amar, is right on about this problem. My son has a 500GB MyBook which had the same problem.
He contacted WD whom sent him to a local Technical Service Center, they had him feel out a new registration form then handed him a new one.
The tech. even offered to do a data transfer if my son needed it. Western Digital really stands behind their products.

Hi i`ve just bought the wd elements 320gb yesterday. the problem is that i put the usb in and the light on the product is on but thats all. its not installing and i cant find it on my computer.

The obvious question first is the drive connected with the provided AC adapter?

Are you connecting it directly to a USB port or powered USB Hub? This is not important in external hard drives but it does on portable HD. But just in case keep this in mind.

Other thing is that you have to install the WD Smartware software.

If nothing works, try it on another computer.

If it works, must be a USB port problem.

God Bless You!

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

WD external hardrive(320 GB). Every time i connect it to any computer , the computer stops responding. But the computer dictates that there is an external hddrive connected.

Does this happen if you connect it to a different computer?
On the other computer, virus-scan all the files on the drive.
It could be a computer-virus that is getting launched
when you connect it.

Is it your computer's virus-scanner that is trying to "scan" EVERY file, when the drive is connected?

Start the Windows Task Manager. Connect the drive,
and watch the "Performance" tab, to see what resources are being consumed.

Yes. Go to the control panel, adminstrative tools, computer management, disk management. From there you will see the hard drive and be able to expand it to the full 320gb.

Not Detected on PC

Since you say that it is detected in Device Manager and is shown as working properly, it would appear that the problem is that it is not getting a drive letter. Have you added anything recently that might take up a drive letter like a flash drive? If so, try removing both and then plugging the WD back in. If this is not the case or does not help, do this:

Assuming you are using XP.
Right click on My Computer and select Manage
The computer Management window will open, click on Disk Management
Do you see the WD in the window on the right?
Does it show a drive letter?
If not, you can assign it one by right clicking on it and selecting Change Drive Letter and Paths ...

If the WD does not show up in Disk Management, possible problems are:
1) USB cable is damaged, try another one.
2) USB circuits in the WD case not working properly, hard drive can be removed and put into another case.
3) WD USB case is good, hard drive is good but there is a loose connection inside. Open case and reseat everything.
4) WD USB case is good but the hard drive inside has gone bad (worst case scenario)

I had a similar problem with my WD passport 320GB. When I connected it to my laptop it never showed up on My Computer even though the blue light on the hard drive came on.
Here is what I did:  Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage" and then "Disk Management",. you should see your WD hard drive listed. then click on "change driver letters and paths"  and change it from the listed to another drive. I changed mine from G to F drive and it worked for me.

External Drive not recognized

Have you tried in Disk Management Right-Clicking on the drive and selecting 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...' ? That is the normal way to change or add a drive letter to any drive, internally or externally attached (other than by network connection)?
