Does the fan kick in right after you start the PC up? and does it stay in "overdrive"

There are two things I would guess are up with it.

    1. Your PC is full of dust, to resolve this you need to blast the dust out with compressed air. sometimes a small hoover could also help, an industrial air line would be great but a can of spray air would probably do to start.

    2. Your fan has been set to always go fast in the Bios. going into the bios on startup and changing options there would help in this case.

Could you see if you can find out which fans are running high?

    Thanks

The fan is most likely dirty and it is mostly likely the fan on the CPU. Get a soft bristled brush and a can of compressed and clean it out. It will quiet down.

One time cooling fan caused sony laptop to black out. right now, changing desktop picture caused cooling fan to start heating up. shut down some opened programs and it is all right. what is the problem?...

When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a can of compressed air to do this.

I have a sony vaio vgn nr430e laptop the display goes off as soon as the cpu fan starts rotating

That could be a problem with the heatsink/fan assembly on the processor. It sounds like the processor is starting up, getting warm as they do, the fan starts up but does not cool efficiently enough and forces a shut down due to heat.
Clean out the fan assembly and replace the old heatsink compound on the processor heat sink.
Hope that helps.

Vaio shuts down suddenly, not due to battery

This could be a sign that your laptop is overheating. If you touch the laptop while it is running & you find it too hot, make sure that the fan is running properly & that the air ways are not blocked.
You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced.

If none of this solves the problem, or is not the case, then you might have a bad motherboard.

Vgn-cs26m will not start, boot into windws and shuts down

kevin,
Is this the pink sony vaio? Looks familiar . . .
The problem with this model of sony vaio is the fan that's why it keeps on shutting down after a few minutes. If you notice there is no activity on the internal fan. The internal fan and heat sink is on the same module.I have already replaced the fan on one of this models and its now working just fine.
just look for a spare fan on ebay . . .
hope this helps . . .
