if you have it set at 60 F and it is working at 65 to 68 F then that would be about right
as the air is cooled the cold air falls to the floor and out under the door, open window or anywhere else it can escape
the unit has to be at 80% room height so if it is set in a window then when the cold air gets up to the thermostat or ac level in the window then it will stop cooling
So if the ac unit is say 4ft from the floor and the ceiling height is 8 ft then the ac will only cool the bottom 4 ft
cold air does not rise but falls down
if you are using a ceiling fan then the cold air is stirred up and the 65F sounds about right
remember that the setting temp ( what you set it at) is the lowest temp that it will go down to before it stops cooling and if that is not reached it will keep working to attain that temp and if the room is too big, air leaks under door . around the fit in the window , no insulated walls , hot exterior wall,etc then maybe 65 F is the best you will get
Any thermostat, it's calibrating to cut off at the end of 2nd beginning and cut in 2nd ending of temp.<br />
Ex: In heat mode, If you set @ 68 degree, it will cut off 70 degree beginning and cut in at the end of 66 degree. <br />In cool mode, if you set at 68 C degree it will cut off at the end of 66 and cut in will be at the beginning of 70 degree.<br /><br />
If you are talking about the difference between heating mode and cooling mode and the room setpoint, you can not change it. It comes from the factory with a 3 degree difference. In other words if you raise the heat setpoint until it is within 3 degrees of the cooling setpoint, for every degree you raise the heat setpoint the cooling will raise a degree.
About all you can do is increase the distance between the heat and cooling setpoint. To do this either lower the cooling setpoint to 3 degrees higher than the heat setpoint you want and then increase the cooling setpoint the desired setting. For example heat and cool setpoints are 67 and 70 respectively, and you want 65 and 73. Lower the cooling setpoint to 68 and then raise the cooling setpoint to 73. Now your heating will come on 3 degress lower than 68, the 65 you wanted and cooling will come on at 73. Remember, the thermostat new setpoints will turn on the cooling at 75 and turn back off at 73 and heat will turn on at 63 and turn off at 65.
You can perform the same using the heating setpoint, just have to look at it backwards. If you need to lower the difference I recommend a 8000 series thermostat. They are the most functional thermostat that Honeywell makes, be in mind they are about 3 times more expensive and many of the setting require a well trained tech to interpret and set properly.

Since it's within 2 degrees of your setting it could be one of two things. Most furnaces run longer (pass your setting) to maintain the setting you made. Which really not a problem. However, your thermostat may need calibrating. To test this theory, place a regular wall thermometer next to your furnace's thermostat and see if the two temps match when the furnace cuts on and then when it cuts off. If the temps are both the same, the furnace thermostat is fine.
If you're turning it down to 68, because no one will be at home during the day, just set it 2 degrees cooler than 68 degrees. You will then wind up with 68 degrees.
Is the thermostat set up for automatic change over from heat to cool? If so, the heat is probably set for 75, you will need to lower the heat setting in order to Lower the cooling. the stat won't let these settings with in 2 degrees of each other so the heating and cooling don't fight each other.
Check and see if it is froze up. Check big line at outside unit for ice. check filter and replace as needed. Check outside fan to see if it is running. Wash out outside coil If fan and compressor are running and has hot small line at outside unit. If not froze up and coil is clean you will need to call in a pro. If compress over heated you may need to wait for it to restart if coil was dirty. Again make sure out door fan and or unit is running and clean.
If the space temp is (example) 72 degrees and you set at 80 degrees the unit should not come on. The A/C comes on when the space temp gets 2 degrees above setpoint temp. What type of tstat was installed digital or old syle mechanical. I'm leaning more towards a short in tstat wiring
