They could not have charged you anything unless you agreed to pay for it. You have not mentioned the name of the SW. Also what you agree to pay for the SW is entirely between you and the vendor. All SW are quoted differently by different vendors.

If you are sure there are no files in the phone memory,
Move one music file to the phone memory, switch off the phone, remove the memory card. Then switch it on and try opening the music player, if it continues, then you have to flash the phone. You can't format the phone on your own because its just a java phone. Take it to a nearby phone engineer and tell him to flash the phone for you.

try the following code:
if not working, switch off the phone, press the following keys at once: 'answer key' '3' and '#'
keep them pressed and then switch on the phone.
do not let go of any key untill u see the text 'formatting' written on the screen.
then let go of the keys and the phone will format it self.
