Question about Maytag 25.6 cu. ft. Wide-By-Side Refrigerator with PuriClean II Ice and Water

1 Answer

Refridge would cycle on, fan would come on relay would click but no compressor. relay kept clicking no compressor. I changed relay and capacitor on compressor plugged in all went well. after a few hours temps came down made ice fine fridge temp good. when it cycled off it cycled back on after awhile. Fan came on relay clicked but no compressor. Same problem. On a hunch I unplugged power line plugged back in and fan and compressor came on as they should Help would be appreciated. Frank.

You were lucky . compressor must run with fan or it will get too hot . if comp is running to hot it will not come on and the fan will . . do you have the cardboard back on frig . this helps direct air to cool comp .. reck the wire connections . and last you may have to take a power ( amp ) reading . the compressor may be bad .. mm.. ps do not run on ext cord and make sure the power at wall plug is good power ...

Refridgerator does not get cold and emits a clicking sounddown by the motor.

It may be the thermal overload protector clicking due to a locked rotor in the compressor. A bad start capacitor can cause this too.

Could it be the overload relay capacitor?

HI YES ERIC.IT COULD BE.but first service condenser unit and check con/fan to rule out overheating.if all fails then then it could be the compressor.good luck Ali

We changed the mother board and the refridg is still not cooling. We hear a clicking sound on the relay next to the compressor. Can you help?

:
Hi!
A relay starts the compressor with a higher voltage and then quickly kicks out
It does a lot of clicking (trying to start over and over again)
If thats what is happening with yours
Its best for a tech to replace The relay but you can do it
Take your model number to your Local Appliance parts store they will have a diagram
showing you how to install the relay. Its called a hard start relay
I use part no ERP410 POWER START RELAY, CAPACITOR AND OVERLOAD all in one. (110 v)

Freezer cuts on every 3-4 minutes. stays on 8-10 seconds. some thawing occuring

If I understand you correctly the compressor is short cycling. The more it does this the worse it gets by causing the compressor to overheat. Sometimes the problem is because the condenser fan or evaporator fan being defective. Pull away from wall and remove cover over compressor unplug and feel top of compressor and if too hot to keep hand there keep unplugged but do examine the evaporator and condenser fan to eliminate them as a reason. The most likely reason is start relay and or start/run capacitor and sometimes a worn out compressor.

Parts in that photo are marked as 10 overload/relay, 11 is the run capacitor and 3 being condenser fan motor. Condenser and evaporator fan motors do not always stop completely when bad so make sure both run while compressor is running. Freezer not freezing, refrigerator warm, hear clicking sound

sounds like a bad starting capacitor ... thats about a 2 inch container mounted on or near the compressor .. it will have wires attached ... dont let the compressor keep cycling like that .. it will eventually damage the compressor and the refrigerator will quit working before long anyhow .. there is a little cooling now only because the compressor is successful at starting now an then but that wont last long ...unplug the unit until repairs are done .. move your food to another cooler .. the click you hear is the thermal overload switch shutting off the compressor power when it gets too hot .. the starting capacitors are not expensive and may have plug in electrical connectors that will make replacement easy .. it could be soldered in and that would make it a bit more difficult but usually there is a plug .. there will be numbers stamped on the capacitor .. thats what you need to get a replacement .. or you could remove it and take it with you to a parts supplier .. sometimes there are two capacitors in one container .. both have to be changed at the same time in that case (one for the compressor and one for the fan) ... there will be a part number and a value number .. the value might be something like "16 MFD " at 300VAC that gives you the value of the capacitor (not the phisical size) that example would be "16 micro farads" .. the 300VAC is the voltage rating
the part number gives you the size and mounting configuration as well as the value .. make sure the unit is UNPLUGGED before working on the capacitor .. if you call a refrigerator repairman then it should take him only about 15 min to replace the part if he has an equivalent part with him ... you could give him the model number of your frig and that you suspect the "starting capacitor" before he comes out ..so he can bring one with him ..

Refridge quit cooling suddenly inboth freezer

That could be a broad range of possibilities. The defrost timer, adaptive defrost board, compressor start relay, compressor start capacitor or a mother board. Would you happen to have the model number so I can narrow down those possibilities? If you pull away from wall remove cover over the compressor and then unplug. Touch the compressor and let me know if cool, warm or too hot to touch. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Refridge hums then you hear a click, lights dim like the compressor turned on then another click a few seconds latter.this same cycle repeats .evaporator and compressar fans stay running.

it sounds like a bad:
  •   start switch (on the side of the compressor) or
  •   compressor itself
  • the start switch clicks  off usually when the compressor is pulling too many amps or the compressor is overheating. if the compressor is not even running then its probably not overheating.
  • so either the compressor is pulling too many amps (bad compressor) or the start switch is bad and cannot handle the amps required to start the compressor.
