You buy a helicoil Kit. If it does not come with a drill bit, be sure that you have one the precise correct size. Drill out the hole being certain to capture all shavings. Thread helicoil on to the install tool, and screw into the hole until the top or last thread of the helicoil is about 1 /2 thread down the hole.
Then remove the tool. Now you have to break off the far end or install tab of the helicoil, do not thread bolt in to break off, it will not do so, and will shave the bolt threads, you need to break off and extract this little piece.

Then you are good to go.

Can I safely replace a spark plug where there's a helicoil already installed?


if the helicoil was installed correctly there should be no probs when done correct the coil replaces the origional thread and stays put should not come out when you remove the plug.

Got a 95 Chevy Monte Carlo LS I can't get my last valve to tighten down think the hole is script what should I do r how to fix that


Take it back off, Buy a helicoil set. Basically.. Drill the hole out, tap it out to a bigger size. insert the heicoil(which reduces it to the size of the bolt.. A good heicoil set will have the drill bit, helicoils, tap, and the tool to insert the helicoil. Put down rags to catch the metal shavings while drilling and tapping. Then clean the tapped hole(Brake clean and blow it out with air) and use thread lock on the helicoil. Make sure the helicoil sets down below the surface..

Engine oil leaking, draw bolt is slightly slipping from the groove.


You have two options:

1. Repair the stripped thread with Helicoil.

2. Re-thread the hole and install a larger drain bolt.

I'd lean slightly towards #2, as Helicoil installation requires more skill and can get botched more easily.

Im replacing the head due to the sparkplug chamber being stripped. Whats the torque specs for SSR 110 dx's Header so i can replace it.


Don't know the torque. Have you tried a helicoil? You drill out the old threads, retap to the helicoil thread and turn in the helicoil and then turn the spark plug into the helicoil. Be careful you don't get shavings into the cylinder.

1997 ford expedition spark plug blow, its all strip. its an aluim head. is there a quick fix or do i have to replace the whole freaking heads?


The Spark Plug hole can be repaired. The professional way is to remove the cylinder head, and use a repair such as a Helicoil.

The spark plug hole is tapped out to a larger thread size, with a special Helicoil tap. Loctite or some other form of thread locker is applied, and the Helicoil is inserted.

Helicoil's are made of Stainless Steel, and are much better than the original material used in the cylinder head. (Be it cast iron or aluminum)
Drag racers use Helicoil's in their engines.

Tapping out the spark plug hole for a Helicoil, or using a special thread chaser, is NOT a good idea, while the cylinder head is still installed on the engine.
The tap creates chips of metal which fall down into the cylinder.
Using a vacuum to try to alleviate the chips, falls short of a good repair job.

Repairing broken helicoils?


same model only 10k miles. Got it from first owner who didnt use it much. Its been repainted once had stainless fasteners so it looks quite mint but still has some fun surprises in store . . . Unbolted the front brake calipers for the first time the other day to change tyres. all four threads on the fork sliders have been helicoiled and part of the the inserts came out on the stainless caliper bolts. I reckon they are m10 x 1.5. I checked the helicoil topic already - so what I'm asking is: is it OK to replace broken helicoils with same or something better? Will I have to go up a size to M11 x 1.5? how do i get the remains of broken helicoils out? ,Heli coil makes a removal tool,a pointed device, which digs into the coil so you can unwind it. You can probably improvise. Just remember the coil has to be unwound to remove. You may be best off coming from the back side to unwind?? As long as the threads are still good I don't see any reason why you can't recoil with the same size insert?? You may want to use anti sieze on the fastener to keep from siezing again. I wouldn't use anything on the heli coil insert prior to install. Heli coil also makes a coil that locks in place after first time use.,,,
