Question about Olympus FL-36 TTL Flash

Olympus FL36 flash unit

Hello, i have an olympus e510 and have bought a compatible flash - olympus FL36. I would like to know why the control panel does not light up when the camera is on, as the E510 has communication capabilities to enable this function, as described in the instruction manual of the flash unit, page 11. This is not happening and I have to do this manually everytime I want to look at the settings, at night. Can you please clarify whether it does, or does not have this function.
Also, have any other owners of the E510 had problems with the print on the body and buttons wearing off. This happened to me within the first 5 months when I noticed this occurring.
Also, the front rubber grip on the right side of the camera has fallen off as well, and I am very particular on the care and how I look after my camera.
I was told that sweaty fingers or the constant removal of the camera from its carry bag was the problem. I use my computer every day for many hours, and the print has not faded off that. It is being repaired under warranty by a very good repairer.
Thanking you
Angela

Hey I have an E510 and an fl 36 flash unit and no problems for a year now.
And no problems at all {knock wood]!
Have you checked to see if all the flash pins are making contact?
Normally I only turn my flash on after I put it on the camera and then turn the camera off and then on again to see if everything is ok. I remember the flash would not communicate with the camera on a shoot and after a while I realized that the flash was not all the way in the hot shoe. Fool around with the flash off the camera first and see. The flash have modes that you have to set up if the mode is set in full manual that might be a problem. There is a button that you have to hold down for three seconds to get in the menu, Get hold of your manual or download one My buttons are fine and have not faded any at all. I realize that the power button an the flash is hard to press on, I do hope I was of help .GOOD LUCK

How can I turn down the power on the FL50 to get more flashes. Can you turn down the power on the camera E510 with hte FL50 attatched?

the user manual is here http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/download/manual/accessories/man_fl50_e.pdf
Have a look at page 46 TTL Auto mode - you can adjust the variable between power setting - + or - 3 stops Page 48 gives full details on adjusting this setting
Light intensity adjustment
  • The flash light intensity can be adjusted between +3 and –3.
  • The light intensity adjustment must be set to ON in the custom setup operation (page 61). • The indicator appears in the control panel.
  1. Turn dial B to select a light intensity adjustment value in the following steps. (This selection is also possible with dial A.)
  • 0 → +0.3 → +0.7→ +1.0 ... +3.0
  • 0 → –0.3 → –0.7→ –1.0 ... –3.0
  1. The display shows the light intensity adjustment value except when the value is 0, in which case the display does not show the light control range.
  2. If the camera’s flash adjustment mode is selected, the actual flash light intensity will be the total of the light intensity adjustment value set on the FL-50 and that set on the camera. The light intensity adjustment value displayed is that of the FL-50 only.

I want to use a Minolta TTL flash on a Olympus e-420 camera. It's possible with an adapter? Thank you

No there is no adapter since the pins are configured differently. There is no compatibility between these two devices.

No the 283 is not compatible with your camera. The 283 is manual only and not TTl. The canon flash is also not compatible with your Olympus. You need an olympus compatible flash.

I have a Digi-Slave Dual Mode DSF-Is and wonder if this unit is safe to use as an flash attachment on a Olympus E-510? Now I just use the flash as a slave unit. There used to be warnings that some flash...

This flash (was designed for digital) should be ok with E-510 alough it is not a TTL flash. If u look on top of the flash mount on the E-510 u will see some extra pins these are for TTL communication the camera talks to the flash to let it know it has recieved enough light and extinguish the tube. If u put the wrong flash on the camera u could damage these connections in the camera. I suspect the flash u are suing is not TTL and should be only one pin on the bottom of the flash unit if this is the case u will be ok.Olympus is good stuff I have an Evolt e-300 if u look on e-bay u can find a new TTL flash compatable with the E-510 at a very good price.

Olympus fl-50 powers up but flash does not fire / work

I have the same problem, I have looked every where even on the Olympus site and have no luck finding anything, I paid £280 pounds for this unit and have hardly used it. Took it to a few repair center's & they reckon £200 pounds to repair it (how can that be) I only want it repaired and am sure it is the bulb I don't want to buy a new one this could happen again at great cost to me. I have to say I am not very happy with Olympus at all, bad service, & lack of help with this problem.
