New Hard Drive Dell Dimension 3000

My hard drive was fried by a recent storm. I installed a new hard drive and used the reinstallation disk that came with the computer to install windows xp home edition. Everything loaded fine and the computer boots up. The problem is that everything (icons, etc.) are huge on the screen, it won't let me change any of the video settings (it only shows the default monitor, not my flat screen LCD monitor), and it says that I have no drivers for sound, etc. Am I missing a disk that has all of the drivers?

Did it happen right away after your reformatting? or did you use internet or flash drive or the usb after reformatting?

Those basic (default) drivers you need are on a seperate disc and you have to install them manually then after you can update driver for your particular monitor

I am installing a new WD3200AAJB HD in a Dell Dimension 4550. This is the only HD in the system. There are also 2 CD drives and a floppy drive. I used the jumper settings the drive came with which pins...

Reinstall your old hard drive as master and install the new hard drive as slave.

Here is the link to jumper settings from Westrn Digital;

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1540&p_created=#jumper

If you've got your jumper settings wrong and installed your os on the 127 GB section of the 320 GB Hard drive and you change jumper settings and then you have problems you may need to reinstall the old hard drive as master and the new hard drive as slave. Reformat the new hard drive as 320 GB, and as a bootable drive. You can either do a disk copy from old to new or reinstall your os on the 320 GB drive. Please let me know how this goes. Having Trouble Reinstalling XP on my Dell Dimension 3000

Here's what I would do. Download and burn any Linux disk. Install Linux and delete all partitions while doing so. After that, initiate the Windows XP installation and see if that works.

This will take care of two things:

If you can install Linux, then the hard drive is good and the partition that was previously on there will be deleted (I suspect the partition is locked which can be caused by a virus or the software used to scrub hard drive).

Check your CDs for Windows (for scratches) or it could be your actual CD drive is out (laser) which would make the installation fail. If the CDrom cannot read the disk, it locks up like that during installation...even if it read before.

I have a PC Dell Dimension 2400 with a hard 40 GB

Basically when you install a new boot drive you need to install Windows operating system on the new hard drive, also the device drivers (eg video, audio, modem, LAN etc), your programs and data. The reason programs has to be installed is because the installation process copied DLL files to the System folders and makes changes to the registry.
You can only copy your data onto the new hard disk.
To avoid copying your data to the new hard drive, you can set up the old hard drive as second hard drive (ie. slave drive), if you delete the redundant folders and leave only the data folders then you have an adddition 40Gb of disk space.

Check to see which bios version your computer is using. An update is probably necessary in order for the computer to detect the drive correctly.

If that doesn't work most hard drive manufacturers have software that you can install so that the bios will detect the drive correctly.

What's the make and model of the new drive?

Dell Dimension 2400 with secondary SATA hard drive keeps crashing

generally all computers can handle a secondary hard drive. i myself am a dell tech. why not try to increase the wattage output of your power supply from the present 200 or 250 watts to at least 300 or 350 watts to give enough provisions for additional devices that will be connected to your computer. normally a hard drive will get burned or fried because of a loose power cable connection. data cable will never fry your hard drive. try running the hard drive diagnostics if it passes then it should work well. try also using chkdsk /r in the command prompt to fix your hard drive if the damage is not that extensive.

If you mean you need to install windows, you need to set your cdrom drive as first boot device in advanced bios settings or it will try to boot into a non-existent windows. Make sure your hdd is showing as the master drive, save settings and exit bios. Re-boot pc with windows disc in cd drive and hit enter when prompted to boot from cd.
