Question about Malibu Hardware & Accessories

2 Answers

Hello! I have a Malibu transformer for my outdoor lighting. Last night, we had a severe rain storm. During the storm, my outdoor lighting went out. When I went to check the transformer box this morning, the power is still going to the box but the lights are not working. I tried unplugging it to do a reset to see if it would fix the issue but did not work. I don't see a reset button the the box. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks, Katie

My malibu transformer has a reset button on the back near the terminal connections. If the transformer is on (time displays on the panel) but the light fixtures are not lit, look for the reset button on the back and depress it.

Here's simple test: Leave unit plugged in. Remove wires from unit. Use On-off dial to turn ON system. Use wire to scratch across terminals where wires connect >> do you see any sparking that would indicate voltage is present? if voltage is present, your lights may be burned out from last night's power surge ... or those pesky contacts that connect light to the main wire need to be re-done. More info on burned out lights below

another clue: is malibu box warm when you touch it? Transformers get warm because 120V continually runs through a coil ... and the magnetic field from the first coil creates lower voltage in another coil. Same as your phone charger. Transformer runs 24-7. The timer does not turn off the transformer, it just switches off the main wire going to lights

If transformer is warm, it says that power is available. That would narrow problem down to timer mechanism. You might try turning malibu upside down for a couple days in dry environment and see if that revives the unit.

If transformer does not feel warm, then transformer is probably burned out. Electrical devices go bad, especially when exposed to weather.

Malibu manual has some troubleshooting steps located below step 8.

-You checked electric supply.
-Turn on-off dial to ON to see if override works

-Troubleshooting mentions power conditions/ voltage conditions ... which I assume would include power surge ... it doesn't say specifically that this causes transformer failure .. but it points to bulb failure.
-Troubleshooting mentions burned out lights ... I think they are saying that once a light burns out, that voltage is increased to other lights and burns them out too

Transformers don't have a reset button.

Satellite internet losing service during storm

I just got satellite internet service a few months ago and it has been going OK until there was a thunderstorm last night and more rain today. The internet has not been working very well, coming in and out in spurts. I got my dish from Calera at http://www.calera.biz. Does anyone know how to fix their dishes specifically and figure out how to make the internet work better? Spray TEFLON coating on dish

Problem with Malibu Landscape Lights Transformer ML900TW

Use an extension cord to plug the transformer into a different "test" GFCI receptacle, if it holds on the test GFCI you know that the GFCI for the transformer needs replaced. If it doesn't hold, then the transformer is on the way out and should be replaced. Sometimes motors and transformers will "leak" current and still work, but not trip a regular circuit breaker. A GFCI that is doing it's job will catch it though. Don't force a GFCI like that...you can wear it out prematurely.

One year outdoor lighting (300V #135708) Transformer not working

You need to disconnect the lighting load completely from the transformer and check it's output. If it is dead unloaded, replace the transformer. If it seems to work now, then some part of the lighting circuit has probably shorted out. If there are several circuits coming to the transformer, attach each one separately and recheck for power. When one is attached that kills the output, investigate that circuit. Check for any broken lamps first, then the wiring must be opened at each lamp location to check for a local short circuit. A somewhat tedious fix. Hope this helps!

I just bought a new Malibu Landscape Lighting 200 watt Transformer ML200RT and have 8 10-watt halogen new light fixtures hooked up to it. It worked for 4 days and all the lights went out. I have 11 feet of...

working with those outdoors transformer I have ran into couple would short the unit out by installing it wrong or exposing to lots of waters/moister. Again, it could also be a factory fault unit, some products will only last only few days before it blow out. It happen and most of those unit have 5 years warranty on them. I would take it back and get another and if it happens again than you may not installing it correctly or installing too close exposing to lots of moister and may short the unit out. I don't recommend trying to fix it still having warranty on them, get a replacement and start over. good luck and i hope that help some

Lost signal from the satellite

Signal Fade And Loss ~ Important, especially during winter!

Keep in mind that satellite broadcasts occur directly from fixed satellites in space to users. UPLINKS TO that satellite can happen from almost anywhere in the world! This includes broadcasts from remote studios, satellite vans and trucks.

Even signals from the main providing studios are susceptible to weather conditons even tho they have huge, high-gain transmitting dishes!

Weather is a major factor for both the uplinks and downlinks! Storm clouds can block the signals anywhere in the signal path(s). Rain clouds do too ~ even if it's not raining yet. Water-laden clouds make some of the BEST signal attenuators.

So one may have a gorgeous day in San Diego (let's say), but storms back east could trash satellite reception at his location and potentially everywhere else!

As you know, weather conditions all over the US are changing constantly with many severe storms occurring this past week and during any winter. In fact this week there was total signal loss on several satellites and I suspect storms back east were a big factor.

So it could have just been issues of timing for you. The UPLINK had intermittent problems with signal paths semi-crippled by weather... YOUR weather was CLEAR, but your reception was far from problem free ~ only because of weather problems elsewhere.

If you see intermittent satellite reception do check out the weather... especially back east.

Hope this helps!

Transformer

Several things have happened. 1st have you tried plugging the monitor in the wall and not in the surge protector. 2nd does your power button or LED light uo when you power it on? You have stated the transformer is bad due to lighting strike. Have you replaced the transformer? Your monitor should be coverd under the surge protector warranty. Please answer questions and we will go from there.
