It will work to turn the television on and off, up and down, display the channel number and etc. on the television screen, and some other functions will work. This is the case with all Sharp remotes and televisions. However there are some features and buttons unique to certain models that will not work with a different kind of remote that will not have the requisite buttons. Also if the remote you are using that is not the original remote has buttons for features that your television does not possess, then those buttons will be useless.
Try taking the batteries out, then press and hold down the power button for at least 30 seconds. Re-install the batteries and try your remote. It should be reset and your problem solved.
