Question about Yamaha 2500 Watt Industrial Inverter Generator YG2800i

1 Answer

I have a Yamaha ef2800i that will fire on the first pull, runs up to operating rpm then dies. It won't restart for about a minute. I will go through the fuel system but first I want to check the oil level kill. Where is it located? The oil light does not come on before it dies but as soon as the AC light comes on it shuts down. Is this a clue to a problem?

Classic fuel problem it was. I was able to run the unit on starter fluid confirming it was not the oil level kill, cleaned carb. It now runs great.... Until I put the throttle control motor back on the carb. I indexed the controller to wot with the engine off but it now runs wide open unde a load when not in sw mode. Any ideas?

This is a classic fuel flow problem. The oil level switch is usually screwed into the crankcase fairly low with a single wire attached. I would check the float valve into the carb bowl. Also check fuel filter. Some of these are on the end of the fuel finder hose in the tank. Purrge the fuel system and carb. ALSO verify the fuel supply valves is being fully opened as some are hard to get to.

Getting the control motor set properly is essential. Also check wiring... backwards control power would do this. Often there are springs involved with the govenor systems and those can be critical. The indexing of that control motor is going to be critical and IF by chance it were off 180 degrees that would cause the runaway. Try to find a manual or call the manufacturer for alignment procedure or the other thing is to keep trying different indexing till you find the right one. Indexing can be tough to keep track of as often there are springs that go "sproing" and disturb the setting before you can document it.

The only other thing is air. I am not familiar with your engine but it sounds like it's not getting air. If you pull the plug after trying to start it is the plug wet?

My 2001 yz 250 N-1 just died after running really strong 10 minutes into the trail. I changed the plug and it wouldnt turn over and just backfire like every so many kicks.

Hi, Brian and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
10. Accelerator pump damaged or not working.
11. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
12. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
13. Fuel tank empty.
14. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
15. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
16. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
17. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

if the plug is sooty your float is set wrong the air filter should have oil on it to catch dirt.sounds like a carb problem although it could be the power valve

Sounds as if you have all the variables to make it go but, I'd suspect that either the tank filter is plugged or there is an inline gas filter that is plugged to a point it's only allowing a small amount of fuel (gas) to enter the carb. It's not uncommon after running and engine bone dry to pick up a bunch af rusty sediment in the bottom of the tank. the filters do their job but end up starving the engine of gas. There is a bit that's running through and after sitting for a few minutes the carb floats fill up and the motorcycle operated normally till the gas in the float bowls runs out and the engine dies.
