Question about KitchenAid KAWS700L Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Hi I was washing a down comforter and it got a bit tangled around the agitator. I unwound it and put it back in to finish spinning . I the noticed a smell, either electrical or rubber, not sure which. At the same time I noticed it , the spin cycly stopped prematurely.........so the two are connected. the spin cycle will turn back on if I restart it, I did this with an emty machine (except the leftover water). The exact same thing happened. It was spinn, seemed fine, I started to smell the same smell and it suddenly quit............. I have replaced my own lid switch, fairly handy, not scared......a big bill scares me more. Any ideas where to start. I'm hoping to avoid removing the cabinet because it's a pain, but if I have to..... Thanks, any insight, suggestions, warning, are appreciated Jenn

You may have a damaged or broken motor coupling. Whirlpool manufactured top loading washers (such as your KitchenAid) use a motor coupling between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission) in place of a drive belt. This configuration is known as "direct-drive". If you were washing something as heavy as a down comforter, it may have caused the rubber bushing to shear apart, or broken one of the plastic tines. If you've replaced a lid switch before, replacing a motor coupling is just as easy. The following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

The part number for a replacement motor coupling is inlcuded in the link I provided. Replacements can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
appliancepartspros.com
pcappliancerepair.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I have listed also included helpful exploded view parts illustrations to assist you with locating and properly identifying any parts you may need. You can view an illustration of the motor coupling as item 13 under the "Brake, Clutch, Gearcase, Motor and Pump" parts list.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Hi my washing machine is tangling up all the washing around the agitator then going out of balance, stops spinning, lights start flashing and beeping? Please help me...

Make sure the agitator is down as far as it can go on the shaft. If it has worked itself partially off the shaft it can cause a gap that will cause your clothes to tangle around the agitator.

Yes its a top loader and cloths are distributed evenly at the moment. My problem is it will not agitate. Its like the brake is locked on. It spins fine but niether the drum or agitator move. the motor is trying but its cant over come the brake (i think). I have had the brake arm off but I am unsure if it needs alinging with the brake tang when putting it back together ?

Not spinning all of the water out of the clothes\/

My washer had this problem, this is what I did.I took the front panel off by prying at the top of the seam with a large flat blade screwdriver.Once the panel was off I dicovered what looked like webbing around the pump cooling fins.Someone had washed a comforter with a hole in it and some of the polyester filling spun out over the tub and got tangled around the pumps fan blade and slowed the pump down.I cleaned it out and put it back together and it's been fine ever since.

I have a SIMPSON ENCORE 555 heavy duty washing machine. It will do a normal wash cycle, but when it comes to the spin cycle, it doesn't distribute the washing around the drum and hence won't spin. any...

Hi just read your posting. Now does the washing tangle around the agitator? In your posting you mentioned the washing not distributing around the drum.Could you confirm that your machine is a top loader for me,because the word "drum and distribute" are terms for a front loader. If your machine is a top loader which I think it is then the problem could be your brake arm or spin coil is not operating. Please reply and let me know if the clothes are tangling around the agitator.Looking forward to your reply.

WHIRLPOOL TOP LOAD WASHER MAKING GRINDING NOISE FOR AGITATION

When you put the motor in did you replace the coupler between the motor and transmission? When fixing the agitator you need to get the agitator repair kit, It has seals, dogs, thrust plate, cam bearing and seals. The upper agitator is supposed to move only in one direction to get the clothes to move down towards the agitator. Do not overload machine. I have one of these and after 12 years I finally had to install this upper repair kit because the upper agitator quit moving. You may have an agitate cam that is going bad inside the transmission
