Question about Iomega Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have an Iomega SuperSlim DVD Portable Writer that I recently bought to replace a non-functional internal DVD player shipped with my HP Pavilion Notebook (n5450 with Pentium III processor). So far, I have found that the Iomega unit opens and plays CD files, but not DVD video discs. The Notebook identifies the Iomega player as a USB drive, and the original HP Media Player software automatically opens DVD files to display their cover graphic (a still image). But the HP Media Player does not run the movies when the ?play? button is pressed. The HP Notebook has all system requirements listed on the Iomega website for the SuperSlim drive, except 256MB RAM. The HP Notebook shipped with a pair of RAM board slots, but with a single 128MB RAM board installed, the second board slot unused. The Iomega SuperSlim is now connected to a pair of USB 1.1 ports (one port used for extra power to the drive), which the Iomega datasheet claims should be adequate. My only USB 2.0 ports are through a PC Card slot (PCMCIA). The SuperSlim would not run on this PC Card nor on a splitter connected to the PC Card, not even to open the slide-out tray. Beyond upgrade to 256MB RAM, is there something else I should look for to complete an operational installation?

No the movies should play even with 128MB of ram, that is not the problem. It seems like your missing a proper dvd viewing program and video decoder.

I'd suggest that you install FFDSHOW video decoder and VLC media player.

FFDSHOW is available for download here

Download and run the program, in the setup all you need to do is to click next until the setup finishes. and then close or click on finish, it is done and can be forgotten. it will work in background when movies are played to decode to video.

Now for vlc media player.
Download and install the program just like ffdshow. Start the program with a dvd in the drive, click file open disc or dvd. make sure the drive letter is correct (letter of the external drive) and click play. or OK or Open, I don't remember exactly what it reads.

The dvd should being playing.

Let me know how it works.

Using toast 8 my drive will not finalize a dvd

Hi, does it finalize with another software, there are plenty of free software online to download and try, if they finalize in the programme you have downloaded then its a software problem, if you have a hard copy of the software uninstall and reinstall and see if this resolves the problem.

Do I need sata or eide for internal dvd writer on HP a1330n?

This model HP has a SATA disk controller.
You need a SATA DVD writer.
If you are not sure, when you remove the faulty DVD writer, take it with you when you go to purchase a nre DVD writer, make sure the new DVD writer has the same connectors as the faulty DVD writer.

Presumably you're using a usb cable with 2 ends plugged into the computer in order to provide enough power to the dvd drive?
p.s. good price, wasn't it?
