I don't do anything. I get a screen freeze, and then it just winks out (goes black) for about two seconds. When it comes back on, I have all this underlying screwed up pixels in different places. Usually in a straight line from where a window was.

It sometimes winks out within the first 10 min its on. Sometimes it takes an hour or two. But it continues to do it about... 4 - 6 times a day.

For me, this happens in the morning when I first fire it up. Dell Optiplex 745. It will continue for about two hours. The effect is the same as when you install Winders, and it is looking for new hardware. The video will "blink out" for a couple of seconds three or for times. Only the secondary display. Swapped monitors, but no help. Changed video cards, no help. Upgraded ATI drivers. No help. It almost behaves as though there is a bad solder that begins to lose contact as the machine warms up. In my case, it will happen from about 6AM to 9AM and be fine for the rest of the day. We are required to power down at night. Next day, 6AM we start all over again. It is doing it as I type this.

What do you do to make it come back on? Sounds like it might be getting too hot and/or going bad. Try it on another machine and see what it does. Also try another video card because the video card could be going bad.

Yes it can be, try it on other PC first to narrow down the problem.
Most problems in the Dell are failed transistors, poor solder works, see pictures here for guide: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Monitor goes blank less than a second after turning on.

Sounds like either there is a bad connection from the computer to the monitor, or the monitor has a faulty power regulator, causing the monitor to overheat prematurely, and shut off.

My monitor goes black for about 2 seconds then goes back to pict.

Sounds asif the Xenon tubes that backlight the LCD are losing power. Probable cause, a power invertor or PSU fault.
It can be repaired by a hardware specialist, but best written off.
The cost of repair will be better spent on a new monitor.

Lcd monitor power light flashing with no img. seems 2 be frozen

The display is in safe mode and you will need to reset the display to get the display out of the safe mode. There are 2 different model revisions. Please choose the method that will match your revision. Depending on the revision of the monitor, one of the following 2 methods should reset it to a normal state. This reset generally requires both hands and it is sometimes easier with another person.

If the serial number begins with an A and/or your power button on the far right (5th button from left):
Method #1
1. Unplug the VGA cable.
2. Remove the power cable from the back of the monitor.
3. Counting the buttons on the front of the panel from left to right as 1 – 5, hold the buttons 2 and 3 down at the same time (see picture above) and while continuing to hold the buttons, plug the power cable back in.
4. Keep holding the buttons for 5 seconds after the power has been plugged in and then let go. The green light should be steady when you release the buttons.
5. If the procedure worked, the green light will go to amber and you should see a "No Signal" message on the screen for a few seconds.
Method #2
4. Keep holding the buttons until the 4th green LED blink; then, let go. The green light should be steady when you release the buttons.
5. If the procedure worked, the green light will go to amber and you should see a "No Signal" message on the screen for a few seconds.

If the serial number begins with a B and/or your power button is in the middle (3rd button from left):
Method #1
1. Unplug the VGA cable.
2. Remove the power cable from the back of the monitor.
3. Counting the buttons on the front of the panel from left to right as 1 – 5, hold the buttons 2 and 4 down at the same time (see attached picture) and while continuing to hold the buttons, plug the power cable back in.4. Keep holding the buttons for 5 seconds after the power has been plugged in and then let go. The green light should be steady when you release the buttons.
5. If the procedure worked, the green light will go to amber and you should see a "No Signal" message on the screen for a few seconds.

Please disconnect the Monitor Data cable from Computer.
If you see Dell Colored bars, it means, monitor is working fine,
If still black, please ask for replacement, since Monitors have 3 years of warranty if not purchased with the computer.

Now connect the cable back to computer and turn the computer off by holding the power button on computer and turn it back on...

Blinking Green shows that computer is in sleep mode......

Hope this should resolve the issue.

Dell E172FP, monitor blinks then goes blank or black

This is a known problem of the Invertor board. If you are technically able you can open the monitor and resolder transistors 2sc5707 as also all pins of 4 yellow invertor transistors that you can see near the backlight connectors.
Samir.
