What would cause the alternator to run hot on a 1949 farmall cub tractor

Sounds like your still running power thru the original regulator also. Disconnect the original system completely so that your running power directly from alternator's inboard regulator and to the battery. Nowhere else.

Alternator wiring diagram on farmall M tractor

I am converting farmall h tractoer electrial system from 6 volt to 12 volt. Need a diagram of wiring using an alternator

If the kit contains a wire and a diode, one would ASSUME it is a standard "3-wire" alternator, rather than a less-desirable (goofy) "one-wire" unit.

Here's a simplified diagram.

Please note the diode, an "idiot light" or a 10 Ohm 10 Watt diode can be used interchangeably in the "excite" wire lead.
