The S2 IS is designed to work with SD cards, not SDHC cards. While an SDHC card will fit into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Memory card locked

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

How to format SDHC card on Canon PowerShot

The PowerShot S1 doesn't take SDHC cards, only CF cards. If you're asking about some other camera, not all of the cameras deigned for SD cards take the higher-capacity SDHC cards.

Camera screen says card locked and a new mwemory card says error...please help

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common cause is having the tiny slide switch on the side of the card in the wrong position. The second most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. There are also other common causes if the above didn't help, with troubleshooting steps for this problem listed here.

It says memory card error - card is locked But the memory card is not locked

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". Some include trying to use of a 4GB SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Others include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.

I am having trouble formatting a memory card. I have inserted it and have located the format option, but it is blacked out and I cannot choose it from the menu list.

I have a Canon PowerShot A590is and when i turn it on i get a Memory card error on display screen. I have troubleshot the problem looking through the form, and manual and found that formatting the SD card...

Maybe it is having trouble with the size of the memory. Memory cards have grown enormously in capacity in the last couple of years, and even relatively new cameras may not be able to cope with the memory size of the newest cards.

SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

Will the Power Shot S2 IS accept a SDHC card? The user guide has no information available.

No it won't, you'll experience "memory card error" if you try. It was designed well before the SDHC format came out.

Canon camera won't accept SD memory card

It's a good bet that anything 4GB or greater is a SDHC card (look on the card, see if SDHC is written there). Your A530 was designed before the new SDHC format came out. Sorry, but your camera will not recognize this type of card. Recommend instead that you get a 2GB standard SD card. They're relatively inexpensive these days.
