I am having problems with my USB connection between my camera, a Fuji FinePix E550 & my laptop. It has worked beautifully up until a few months ago, then occasionally I'd get a message that the device was not recognized....if I turned the camera off & on a few times, the computer would open it. Today, I've been trying all day to download some pics, have turned the camera on & off, tried the USB cable in all 4 USB ports on the laptop and it won't open it at all. I have Windows Vista and my computer is a Gateway laptop. Do you have any idea what I might need to do??
Carol
Have you considered NOT connecting the camera to the computer?
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive Or you can use any photo cataloging program..Have you considered NOT connecting the camera to the computer?

The problem you are experiencing with your Fuji FinePix E550 could be down to a number of reasons.
You do not say the memory card size you are using but the Dell 942 will probably only read cards xD-Picture Cards 1Gb or lower.
It maybe a better idea to remove the xD card from the camera and use a USB card reader to take the images off the card. Alternatively you could buy a replacement USB cable
You need to install the camera software on the computer then print from there but you will need a USB cable to connect to the printer, just check your camera does not require a special Fuji cable. Or possibly a card reader direct to the printer will work but I am not sure on that one, see printer manufactures for information on this.
Good luck
The quickest, least hassle and best way to get pictures from the camera to the computer is with a memory card reader. These devices are relatively inexpensive and connect to the USB port of your computer. When the memory card is installed the computer see it as an external Hard Drive and the files can be opened copied and pasted in a new folder in your "My Documents"

This has happened with a few cameras that I have had in for repair and removing the optical sensor ribbon from its socket and then fitting it back in has worked about 80% of the time.
You really don't need the Fuji download program to download everything from your camera. Any number of programs in Windows XP or Vista or from other cameras should work as well as Finepix. I have an E550 and usually download with Windows Photo Gallery--the compatible programs pop us as soon as you connect your camera with a cable, or put the xD memory chip into the computer chip reader. Still, if you want the original, you can download it all at http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital/download/index.html and choose the right one for your OS. I'm sure Fuji will have a download of the instruction manual, as well.
due to very low temprature some malfunction may have occured. keep it in normal temprature for few hours and then try switching it ON. even if this not solves take it to some service centre.
It works fine for me. Reember it works ONLY in P mode. The problem is due to the Fuji E550 does not provide focus indicator, you have to judge the image to see when the object is in right focus.
Sounds like you have a poor connection to the batteries. If you take the batteries out, the settings all revert. Clean off the metal pieces which connect to the batteries with a dry abrasive substance. Good luck.
