Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have a 50 inch plasma tv that goes black after a few minutes of watching it. I can still hear the channel but the picture goes black. I have checked all connections and have switched out the cable box too. What could cause this problem. At times it has been slow to switch channels recently too.

The tv is on again I let it sit for a while and has been on for about 15 min without going black. It was working all day so I am not sure why this is happening. I have noticed too that when changing channels it has been taking longer than it used to and I often see a no signal sign floating around the tv lately. I assumed that was the cable box not the tv doing that but I am unsure. Could it be anything else but the boards? And how hard is it to change the boards? Can u let me know where to find the parts too?

is the board expensive ie. cheaper to buy a new tv or fix it?

Yikes that's a nasty one.. a couple things could cause this problem but by far the most likely is the video board of the TV starting to fail. You may be able to reset it by just unplugging the TV from the power source for a good 2 minutes, then replugging it in. If it doesn't you will want to try to replace the board (if you are capable that is...) and go from there. If after replacing it, it still does the same thing, then return that video board and get a mainboard for the TV, although that is much less likely. But between those two parts you should be good. Let me know if you want me to try and track down the parts for you. If you do please include the make / model of your plasma TV.

There is not much of anything it could be but those boards... When you change channels does the sound change right away or is it just as slow as the video? If it's just as slow it could still be one of the boards, but may be your cable box as well. You could always try that cable box on another TV if you have one, to verify it's not the cable box.

You can get the parts from

The board is expensive even to do the repair yourself. Not quite as much as a new TV but definitely not worth it to try and repair in my opinion. It will still be very expensive, and for whatever reason in plasma tv's when one part goes it seems to start a chain reaction... weakening the rest of the components. So chances are some other part will fail sooner than later and you will be back in the same boat. By the time you get it fully up and running you will definitely be in more than just a new TV would have cost.

I do still recommend plasma's, Panasonic as well, they are extremely reliable and top notch quality. I am not sure what brand you have here but I would bet it's probably not a Panasonic, and if it is it's probably quite aged. Either that or somehow you happened upon a bad batch, which I've only seen on a small handful of occasions. By far Panasonic is the way to go I feel.

Sounds possibly like image retention. If you watch the same channels often any recurring text, logos, or graphics, especially white colored, can ghost on the screen.(playing the same videogame for a long period can also have the same effect) Watching other programs or channels will cause the ghosting to disappear.

To prevent image retention you need to activate the TVs anti image retention mode(Called ISM Method). On Zenith and LG (the manufacturer of Zenith T
s) plasma TVs open the TVs menu, select the Option section (picture of a briefcase with a wrench). Select ISM Method and change it to Orbiter, this is reccomended if you watch programs or channels (or play videogames) that have still images for long periods of time. It moves the image a little every couple minutes.

If watching others channels or programs doesn't make the image disappear, change the ISM Method to either Color Wash or White Wash (don't use White Wash frequently, it over excites the plasma gas and can shorten the life of your TV if overused) for a few minutes and then return to Orbiter.

Watching a football game picture is very unclear

The noise reduction option will cause a blur on fast movement. Also, you probably already know this, but a standard definition broadcast will look very blurry on an HD TV, so make sure the channel you're watching is actually an HD channel.

Oh, wow, I just noticed that this is from October. Oh well, maybe you're still having problems.
