Can't remove the chuck from my Skil Mdl 6237, 3/8" drill. The jaws are locked open as far as they will go and I can't figure out how the chuck is attached to the drill.

The drill chuck is locked and not shifting forward or reverse

Check that there is not a reverse screw in the bottom of the chuck which has become loose. This can jam the chuck, screw it in (anti clockwise) or Spray inside with WD40, then use a large pair of grips to free it in both directions.

How do i take out a skil 12 volt battery drill bit. i havent used the drill in a year or so and i forgot please help, or not

Hi ladogers,

Welcome to fixya!

This drill has a keyless chuck. To remove the bit, just turn the chuck to the right (looking from the handle to the front) to open the jaws. To put in another bit, tighten the chuck to the left to close. You have to use both hands. You will see where the ridged portion of the chuck is in two sections. Hold on to the back section with your left hand to keep it from turning while you turn the front section with your right hand.

A lot of the time I just push the button to put the drill in reverse, hold on the front section of the chuck and turn it on. It will loosen by itself. Then when you put the new bit in, put it in forward and hold on to the chuck and press the switch. The bit will be in nice and tight.

Good luck,

Thanks,

I have a skill 18v drill and the chuck jaws that hold the bit has one stuck down and two even, i have taken off the chuck but was wondering how to disassemble the chuck itself or if there is another way to...

Lube the chuck with some penetrating oil and bring the two loose jaws near the surface. Take a brass or soft hammer and pound the face. The stuck jaw should come down. They have a spring to push them down, but sometimes grits or other contamination causes them to stick.

How can i remove the chuck from my cordless dewalt power drill

Hello, W/D here.

To remove your chuck, open the jaws of the chuck fully, but don't open them so tight that they lock in the open position. Remove the screw inside the chuck. Spray the inside of the chuck with penetrating oil. Tap around the edge of the chuck, while pulling it away from the motor.
It should come right off, with a little effort.

Best regards, --W/D--

My drill chuck is defective,i want to know how to replace it

If the chuck will open far enough, reach in with a screwdriver and remove the retaining screw. If a key type, insert the key and tap the key in a CCW direction to loosen. If a keyless type, use 'Channel-lock' pliers and tap them lightly in a CCW direction. Reverse the operation with the new chuck. Good luck!

I cant get the drill to open up to remove the bit. What do i do?

Your chuck is jammed. You can use a punch that is the same size as the jaws and a small hammer. You can tap the jaws back with the punch ever so slightly. Tap on each jaw the same amount of times. Start on one jaw with one tap, then to the next, and then to the third. After tapping each try to turn the chuck to open. This will dislodge the jaws slighlty and you should be able to move it. Keep doing this until you can open the chuck or remove the bit. After removing the bit spray some lubricant into the chuck and work it back and forth the whole length of the jaws. If this does not work you can put the bit in a vise and use a rubber or soft end hammer to hit the chuck off the bit. In this case you will have to replace the chuck. There is probably a bad spot in the jaws that is stripped.

Chuck jaws on Makita 8444D fell out

There is suppose to be a flat head Left hand thread chuck screw in there. It may have fallen out. You will not be able to put the jaws back into the chuck. You will have to replace the chuck with a new one. If you make sure that the chuck screw is not there you can remove the chuck with a couple of steps. Make sure the drill is in it's lowest gear. Use a strap wrench or some large vise grips on the chuck. If there is still one jaw in the chuck make sure it is all the way open and locking the collar to the chuck. The chuck will come off in the regular lefty loosey configuration. It may be stubborn. If this is the case, You may have to cut the collar off the chuck and use a pipe wrench. Or bring it to a professional to get it changed out.

How do I change the chuck on a 5 amp skil drill. It is keyless.

If it's anything like their other drills, there is a safety screw with left-hand threads inside chuck.

  1. Turn it clockwise until loose.
  2. Then insert the short arm of a 3/8" hex wrench and tighten.
  3. Strike long arm of wrench sharply counter-clockwise and chuck should loosen to unthread from spindle.
