I am assuming that you mean you mean the key for windows?
Is the disc that you are installing from one that was provided by the manufacture? if not then the reason that the key code does not work is because it applies only to the OEM (read manufacture) specific build of windows. You might try checking the manufactures web sight about reinstall disks.
if you right click on "my computer" and check the properties it should tell you what build of the OS you are running. (hoping u can get that far).
