Question about Panasonic TH-42PX500U 42 in. Plasma Television

1 Answer

I have a 2005 Panasonic Viera TH-42PX500U plasma. I have been using it as a monitor for a 5 yr old Macmini...and getting good resolution. I now have a new 2010 macmini, and connecting with HDMI...However....the colors are terrible and the fonts barely legible. I tried all the resolutions the mac software setup offers...without success. Ideas? Thank you...

it is a Macmini, not laptop. It is a Monster HDMI cable

  • rwelch877 Oct 06, 2010

No...new cable....the old macmini did not have HDMI. I believe it is RGB

  • rwelch877 Oct 06, 2010

no I haven't. I thought the HDMI would be a better signal....

  • rwelch877 Oct 06, 2010

I'm at work now....I do have a DVI adapter...so could try your solution tonight.

    thanks

Hello

How are you connecting the display to the laptop? what kind of cables are you using? please be very specific about the cables that you have, post any and all details you see on them.

Same cable that you used with old mac mini or did you replace the cable?

So only thing that has changed is the MAC mini? - everything else is as before?

  • Ekse Oct 06, 2010

does the problem go away if you use the old cable? You can get a DVI-VGA adapter to the connector on the macmini to get it to give same old signal as the old macmini, and picture should be same as before replacing any cable or computer.

  • Ekse Oct 06, 2010

Well in this case VGA and HDMI provice almost same quality as the TV can not use higher than 1366x768. you would not notice much difference in picture quality.

Can you connect the old cable to the macmini? or does it only have the white, wider connection? the DVI adapter will not cost much from apple.

  • Ekse Oct 06, 2010

okay, let me know how it turns out.

  • Ekse Oct 06, 2010

Probably the signal coming from the macmini is not the best format for the display. Might be too high refresh rate or similar, or then the signal is just in a format that the display doesn't support properly, being a big older device than the mac. if you could find the signal format settings in the mac if they exist, trying different formats might help.

but the vga cable will not have this issue.

Your plasma cover screen should be glass, not plastic. I have no knowledge of Panasonic or any other manufacture that made a plasma TV with plastic....all plasma TV's have a glass cover. Clean the surface with a rubbing alcohol solution and a cotton ball.

Our Panasonic Viera 46

Seems like a hardware problem. Something is probably overheating or something like that.

I would suggest either returning/exchanging the TV (2 wks is usually in most return policies) or if you can't do that, register your TV with panasonic. After registering, call them up for service covered by your 1 yr warranty.

Just bought a 50 panasonic viera, when we hook up ps3 on hdmi cable, we have sound but no picture.

Plasma TV normally do not have the resolution required for PS3 unless the plasma TV is fullHD( 1920x1080p) pixels.

HD Ready Plasma = 1024 x 768p
PS3 Outputs = (fullHD)1920x1080 or (HDReady) 1280 x 720p.

LCD TV accepts the resolution matches the resolution the PS3 is outputting.
