Question about John Deere Garden

1 Answer

My John Deere LA150 starts easily. I usually chocke it and turn back to high speed when started. A few weeks ago it would not run without smoking and missing. finally it ran smoothly. I decided it had been flooded. so I didn't choke it agaain . This week It was cool so I choked it and it smoked and missed so I legft it sitting all morning and tried it without choking. It will not run without missing badly. I originally thought the choke was stuck but after looking at the throttle linkage it appears ok. It is only two years old, my yard machine lasted me 12 years without a problem. George Cornett

AN ENGINE THAT IS "MISSING" IS NOT RUNNING ON CHOKE, WHEN IT IS CHOKED IT WILL SIMPLY RUN AT A MUCH LOWER RPM BECAUSE IT IS GETTING MORE FUEL THAN AIR. THE AIR / FUEL MIX RATIO ON YOUR ENGINE IS 14.7 TO 1; THAT IS 14.7 GALLONS OF AIR TO 1 GALLON OF FUEL. SO AS YOU CAN SEE IF YOU ARE GETTING ANY LESS AIR IT WILL RUN FLOODED.
YOU DO NOT SAY WHAT COLOR THE SMOKE IS- IF IT IS BLACK THEN YOU ARE FLOODING, AS TO MUCH FUEL WILL PRODUCE A BLACK SMOKE BECAUSE THE COMBUSTION WILL NOT BURN IT ALL, IF IT IS BLUE YOU ARE BURNING OIL. IF THE SMOKE IS BLACK, REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTER AND BE SURE IT IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY. IF YOU HAVEN'T FOOLED WITH THE CARBURETOR IT WILL NOT NEED ANY ADJUSTING.
IF THE SMOKE IS BLUE, CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL IN THE CRANKCASE, IF IT IS OVER FULL THE VACUUM FROM THE VALVE COVER WHICH OPERATES YOUR FUEL PUMP WILL PULL OIL FROM THE CRANKCASE INTO THE VALVE COVER AREA AND WILL GET SUCKED INTO THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND MIX WITH THE FUEL AIR MIX AND PRODUCE POOR IGNITION COMBUSTION WHICH WILL SMOKE EXCESSIVELY AND MAKE THE ENGINE SEEM AS THOUGH IT IS FLOODED. iF THIS DOESN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM GIVE ME AN ANSWER TO THIS NEXT QUESTION: WHEN YOU SAY IT IS MISSING, IS IT BACKFIRING, POPPING OR SPUTTERING? AND IS IT SINGLE OR TWIN CYLINDER.

My john deere is smoking and i can here it missing when it smoke all i smell is gas someone told me its the carb

well without the model number im guessing its a gas engine model , the condition your describing is a condition called "enriched" now in first start mode this is normal as a "choke" is placed on the inlet to carb to "enrich" the gas to allow it to start , after you place it to run mode then it should remove the choke and engine will increase in its speed and stop smoking and allows you to use it , if your engine isn't doing these things properly then its probable that your carb isn't preforming as it should and requires service (this doesn't allways mean replacement )

Mixer to ritch

most likely one for low speed and one for high speed. Run the mower at high speed and turn the one with the spring 1/8 turn in at a time. Remember where it is now. Turn it in until the engine start to run rough then open it 1/4 of a turn. If that screw is not doing much, put it back where it was to start with and do the same thing with the other one. If neither one does anything, put the throttle to low speed and try it all again. If nothing happens at either speed, you have a definite carburetor problem. In general, if the smoke has a blue tint to it, its usually burning oil. If the smoke is just plain black, its usually a gas problem. I hope this helps. Its kind of tough without being there.

Every time I pull the throttle, or pull down any I have to pull the choke out for a few seconds or it will sputter and die. EVERY TIME

Sounds like its a little lean. Back out the high speed adjustment(bottom of bowl)about half turn, that should do it. If its blowing black smoke turn it in a little.

I have a John Deere LA150 that will not go steep

I have the same problem same year, same model. I changed the drive belt and it still won't go up steep hills that it used to easily climb. I don't see any way to adjust tension and it doesn't cover that in the operator's manual. What did you find out with yours?
