It might be that the beater brush is spinning when you tip it up to look at it but slight pressure of it contacting the floor is enough to stop it. If it were my machine I would remove the beater brush and clean it as best I could, paying particular attention to the end pieces on the brush that hold it in place. A little WD40 between the end pieces and some twisting to be sure it worked in well. I would then reassemble with a new belt being sure it is on correctly so it turns the brush in the proper direction.
That is about the least expensive thing(s) you can do at this point before going further. I have one more potential cause, but it is best to check these first.
Please let me know how you make out.

I am sorry you did not find my solution to be of help to you.

  • ymp8 Oct 07, 2010

Thank you for your reply. It looks like it could be the beater brush. I am going to purchase a new one. I won't be able to get it until next week. I will let you know if that solved the problem.

  • pwillitz Oct 07, 2010

Please be sure that you have to purchase a new one. Quite often it is only the fact that it needs to be cleaned, especially at the ends. A bit of WD40 might save you the cost of a new beater brush.
I appreciate you getting back to me, that seldom happens. :)
    Be well,
    Paul

Hi, I have a 1 year old XL Pro Plus Upright. Motor works fine, brushes are turning but it will not create any vacuum. we made sure thenew bag is connected properly and still no suction. Any advise? Thanks,...

The belt that turns the brush bar is probably stretched and worn. Once this happens, you will lose suction. When they get worn they stretch, thus causing it to spin on the bar itself.Just simply replace the belt with a new one that fits your machine.

Good Luck!

Brushes don't spin

Hello :
try this please : switch the carpet/bare floor dial back & forth 5 times, ending on carpet. Tilt the handle back as if to vacuum upright & lay the vacuum on its side so it is resting on the side opposite the carpet/bare floor dial. Turn the vacuum on.
or try this also if the above suggestion didn't work :
Maybe the belt is broke. You will have to replace the belt before the roller can spin. You must have run over something in the carpeting like string or whatever to have it break. Happens all the time. Get several replacement belts to keep as spares while you're at it as nothing is worse then having to vacuum and no spare belts.

Oreck Belts

Unfortunately this is a very common problem on the Oreck XL uprights. As you you noticed, there is even an extra belt storage on the machine itself, on the bottom plate. When a vacuum cleaner has to put an extra belt on the machine, this should be a clear warning sign that you're going to have replace belts.....frequently! Unfortunately this is just the nature of the beast. Since there is no height adjustment on the nozzle itself, the vacuum will lower until it hits the carpet, the carpet is the only thing that adjusts the height of the carpet attachment. On other vacuums you have the ability to raise and lower the brush head according to what type of carpet your cleaning. When the brushes are at the proper height, the belt is also running at the proper tension and strength on the brush. Since the Oreck doesn't have a height adjustment, the brushes have a lot more resistance to the carpeting, which is what leads me assume that's why the machine goes through so many belts.

Oreck XL's were designed for hotels. Their slogan used to be "The Hotel Vacuum for you Home" even. Anyone who has ever stayed at a hotel knows that most have a very low pile commercial grade carpeting. The Oreck XL does a fabulous job at cleaning low pile carpeting that doesn't have a lot of dirt to vacuum up (restaurants kill most vacuums, but especially Oreck). The problem is that the Oreck XL was originally designed for cleaning low pile commercial grade carpeting, and not to clean plush, piled carpeting. The Oreck's have a 4 AMP motor in them, and where as it's true AMP's don't equal suction power, it's safe to assume that a 4 AMP motor will not produce near the suction as a 12 AMP would. When cleaning low piled commercial carpeting, you don't need much suction power, even an electric broom can clean this type of carpeting.

Oreck however does do one thing right, and that's advertising. David Oreck is everywhere! Newspapers, TV commercials, internet advertising, direct mailers, and more. They spend so much money advertising their vacuum cleaners that everyone is familiar with their products. What most people don't realize is that the customer is the one gets to pay for all of the advertising that's being done! Through the power of advertising, Oreck has taken what should sell for a $100 electric broom, and turned it into a $600 full size upright! Dyson vacuums are the exact same way, a lot of advertising, but not much vacuum behind the price.

Chances are that if you heard about a product through a info-mercial, or a newspaper add, then that product automatically is going to be sell for more then it's worth.

Unfortunately I can't help you fix the problem with your Oreck continuing to burn belts, but I can give you a link to the belts on our site if you need to purchase them. We offer free shipping:
3 Oreck XL® Upright Vacuum Replacement Belts

If you (or your friend) would like a personalized recommendation of a good vacuum specific for your exact cleaning needs, please feel free to add a comment, or contact me, I'd be happy to help.

Even though the brush is spinning, the belt is probably worn out and stretched. when you vacuum the shag carpet, it puts more drag on the brush. try running it on a shorter carpet or hard floor for a few minutes. if it doesn't smoke, then you know it's your belt. if it does smoke, then it's probably the motor burning up.

Dirt smell

If this thing has a fast-spinning belt in the "head" of the unit, you are smelling the dust that is being collected in the back of the little drive "chamber" and is being heated up by the motor and the friction of the belt. This is a pretty common thing on vacuum cleaners designed like the Oreck. If it is huge bunnies of dust, well then that means there is a leak somewhere...

Older Oreck XL, new belt, new bag, checked for clogs, does not pick up
as it used to, and, much harder to push, seems to grab or drag, why????

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. There are a couple of things that may work. Depending on if you have the old style brushroll you can upgrade to a new style Oreck brushroll that has twice the brushes and will a work a lot smoother. Also, clean the bottom plate – get rid of any dust and dirt build up and then spray the bottom with silicone and let it dry after you have totally cleaned it. Always use Oreck genuine belts and to change the belt every 4 to 6 months for the best cleaning and store the extra Oreck belts in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator, other wise if you have a new belt, gag, you have checked for clogs there is no reason why it should be hard to push, if the silicone does not work replace the bottom plate.

Black marks on carpet

Black marks on carpet
posted by carpetburner on Jun 25, 2008
While I was walking on the carpet, I noticed a couple of black marks. I figured it was on someone shoes. I was vacuum a couple of days later and stated noticing small black marks on the right side of the brush marks left in the carpet by the brushes. I tried to clean them and they don't come out. They are sort of like a scorched pinched place or something. I had the handyman take it apart and he found nothing stuck in it, belt was replaced not to long ago, and he said everything looked fine. The black marks are not on the belt side. Maybe a wheel is sticking? It all seems to roll, and turn ok.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Oreck XL Ultra Bagged Upright Vacuum. After reading your question, there are only a few things that could be causing the problem. It is very possible that the brushroll could be dirty, or install wrong, on the ends of the brushroll the gray bearing holders will state NEW and OLD and both of the bearing holders needs to be identical – meaning the 2 should say NEW / NEW or OLD / OLD, not new / old of which could be causing the problem. The average belt change should be done every 4 to 6 months for the best cleaning, and the extra belts are stored in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator. If the wheels are spinning properly then it is not the wheels unless they are dirty and the can be cleaned just by popping them out of the bottom plate holder with a screwdriver and then clean them under the sink. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

The belt is on properly, however the brush will spin, then stop.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Oreck XL Classic. It sounds like the belt may be stretched out and my needs replacing. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months and to store the extra belts in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator. Also check the brushroll, the gray bearing ends with say on either side the words NEW or OLD and both ends need to be identical – new/new and old/old NOT new/old, if the belt and the brushroll are OK then it may be the motor but I don’t think so. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Oreck Vacuum troubleshooting

Hi. If the motor is on its way out the motor noise will be eratic eg slowing down speeding up popping noise & a smell of electrical burning. If you have none of these symptoms then chances are its not the motor. Does the bag inflate or is it easy to collapse when you push the bag ? If bag inflates ok check belt. If bag not fully inflating check for blockages along length of the handle pipe its designed to pull apart by lifting up rubber sleeve at machine end of pipe, push ball latch in & pull pipe out remove any debris stuck in the pipe. Remove bbottom of machine as if replacing belt check to see if there is any debris stuck in the oppening that goes to motor fan, then check the fan blades you can see them through the port is there any missing or snapped off. If blades are missing or have big chunks missing you will need to replace. If fan only has minor bits missing then reassemble it should now worl well.
