Question about HP Bestec ATX-1956D 200w HP Part No 0950-4106 (ATX1956D) Power Supply

1 Answer

I'm replacing a Bestec ATX1956D power supply and want to know if going to a 300 watt power supply is better. More watts, longer lasting? What's the advantage to more watts? Thanks, Bill

I wouldn't say it's necessarily longer lasting, but more watts are better for computer users that use more devices that pull power from the PC. For example, if you are hooking up several USB peripherals that draw their power over USB, or installing extra drives in the computer that will need power.

Take the power supply to a retailer or computer shop in your local area to be tested. Pretty standard from what I have found out.

My computer died and won't turn back on.... when i press the power button i get the power led light for a split second then it goes off... nothing else turns on such as the fan or hard drive... it will not

This sounds like a power supply failure inside of your desktop.
If you're good with a screwdriver, you can order a replacement power supply from Gateway and replace it yourself or you can take the desktop in for service.
On the Gateway web site support page, it provides you with all of the equipment installed within your desktop including the part numbers of the power supplies used.
The power supplies listed are:

PC turns on...but no display. Monitor and cable

I fully agree with you.

Capacitors have gone bad in the power supply. This causes a weak power rail.

Enough power to spin fans, and light- lights, but not enough power to turn on the Processor. (Harddrive is inactive because there is no processor running)

Power supply's are rated in Watts. (Volts x Amperes = Watts)

1.ALL the lights use less than 1 Watt.
2.EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.

A typical Processor uses 55 to 125 Watts!
Depends on the processor.

BIOS won't turn the processor on, and hand the computer over to the Operating System, (Example: Windows XP), because there isn't enough power.

CAUTION!!

I DO NOT advise opening a personal computer power supply!
Those Electrolytic Capacitors I have referred to, hold a charge for WEEKS, sometimes MONTHS, after the power is disconnected to the power supply.

Capacitors are made to slowly build up a charge, then release it all at once!

If someone touches across the terminals of a capacitor, and it's still good, it can release it's charge to them!
If someone touches a circuit that capacitor/s are in, the charge can be released to them!

Shock can range from BAD to FATAL!

It is for this reason that the best, and most effective method, is to replace the power supply with a known, good one for a test.

I realize power supply's do not grow on trees, and not everyone is a computer geek like me, and has several laying around, (I mean Tech, lol!)

IF you are stating this question referring to an eMachines that uses a Bestec ATX style, 300 Watt power supply, the cost is very inexpensive for a new one.

Not to slam a company, but Bestec PSU's are cheaply built, and this is the reason it failed. (IF yours is a Bestec)

You don't have to break the bank however, to replace this power supply with one that is much better.

An ATX style of power supply is a very common one. Approximately 85 to 90 percent of personal computers use this style of power supply.

This example would get you buy for quite sometime, (IF you keep the inside of the computer clean regularly, and the power supply, with a can of compressed air for computers. 75 percent of failed computers that come to my shop are dirty inside)

Just an example. Not advertising for the power supply manufacturer, not the website.

Have any additional questions I'm right here.

I cannot get my w3611 machine to turn on, what can I check?

Replace the power supply. 70 to 80 percent of the computers that come to my shop are dirty inside, and the power supply has failed because of this.

Even if you get a green power light, your power supply isn't supplying enough power to turn the processor on.

All the lights use less than 1 Watt.
EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts
Harddrive just sitting there spinning, uses about 3 to 5 Watts.
When it's time for the processor to turn on, the power supply can't handle it. Not enough power! Processors use 55 to 125 Watts, depending on the processor!

Install a temporary power supply to verify condition.

That mean you have bought the wrong PSU.

Return the new one, when you are at the store you purchased it from, ask them for a Micro ATX PSU, that is the kind you need.

The only other thing you will need to know is how many watts you want it to be, a decent one would be 400-550 watts

Bestec atx-250-12z rev d hp model 5187-1098 pc will not start up when pushing button on front of machine green led on back of p/s flashes with power cord plugged in. does this indicate a p/s failure?

I have already replaced mant Bestec ATX-250-12E power supplies because they have an internal failure. Consider yourself lucky if the thing doesn't power up your computer because it has a problem of imposing the +12 volt line onto the +5 Volt line then blowing out the mother board. Sometimes you aren't so lucky because once the damage is done then it is to late to just simply replace that piece of junk. I was lucky with my daughters E-Machine because if she tried pressing the start switch on the front of her computer it would sometimes come on and sometimes not. She just mentioned this to me and I immediately replaced that Bostec ATX-250-12E before it could do any damage to her computer. If anyone has an older E-Machine or an older Gateway machine then it would be a good idea to see if it uses that Bostec-ATX-250- 12E. If it does then go order another power supply, anything but a Bostec, and instead of a 250 watt order a 300 watt or better. I hope that this has helped those that might have this problem before it destroyes *********** boards. Marty

Upgrade for Bestec ATX-1956D (HP p/n: 0950-4106)

How about the LC Power LC350M Micro ATX - 380 Watt

or the

Logisys 350W Micro ATX

They should fit your form factor and output as much as 350W being relatively cheap, but neither gets 18 amps on 12V rail...
I think no power supply of that size has an output like that...think about a cheap but substancial chassis upgrade if you need that power...Have a look at directron for the PSUs.
