Question about Toshiba 120GB USB 2.0 Portable External 120 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Greetings: I have a 500GB Toshiba external hard drive which has begun to act a little peculiar; it still has all its data and works if plugged in during the laptop boot-up. One folder does not respond and when it is clicked, the hard drive itself fades away; the Toshiba icon turns to the generic, colorless Windows version and I must reboot to get it working again. Because of this, the folder cannot be deleted. I have all necessary data backed up on a different external hard drive that has no problems, so I would like to reformat the 500GB, clear it completely and see if that fixes things. Could you please advise? Thank you for your attention. Sincerely, Douglass dcmental@gmail.com

Does the computer recognize the 500GB Drive when you plug it into your usb port?

Click Start/My Computer and see if your 500GB drive is listed as a device, if not that's a problem.

Try using a different usb port. Also try using the 500GB drive on another computer.

If it's gone belly up, it's not going to work.

Your hard drive is probably dead. However there are stillhopes for hard drive datarecovery.
Put the hard drive in a plastic bag to be compatible for the freezer. Freezingsometimes works to revive a dying hard drive, at least for a shorttime(Probable just about 20 minutes), but be sure that the bag is sealedtightly so that condensation and ice crystals don't form. Put it in yourfreezer for 24 hours that will do the trick. While it's still cold, plug itinto your computer. And you may be able to view it in 'my computer'. And youmay act quickly, because you may only have 20 minutes to recover your data offit and after that the hard drive is completely dead.
If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office where supply datarecovery service but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money andwhether they can recover data is not guaranteed.
Here is a tutorial to guide you how torecover hard drive data.

You can recover data from portable hard drive with data recovery software.Tenorshare data recovery is one of the bests. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, bad section, virus attack etc.Download it and scan your external hard drive for free to preview whether your files can be recovered. You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm After you recover your data, you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.

I have a buffalo 500gb external hard drive. It has worked fine for me up until now. It has begun to make a clicking noise internally and it says that there is a (code 10) or not able to work. is there...

The chattering or clicking noise is the actuator arm inside the drive case trying to move and hitting side fo the case. Think of a record player. The platters inside your hard drive spin like a record does and the heads that read and write data are like the needle and arm that goes across the record. In yours the motor controlling the arm has gone bad. As it tries to initialize the motor the arm is hitting the side of the case. There is no hope for the drive itself. The data on the drive can be retrieved by an external vendor (drivesavers.com, etc) but the cost is high and should only be cosidered if the work has high value monetarily.

Seagate 500gb Free Agent Ex Hard Drive - Class Action siut

DO NOT buy a Seagate freeagent drive under any condition if it comes as a gift return it or re-gift to some one you don't like. Like so many others my 500GB external drive just quit working. Has only been plugged in about 6 times and then back into a cabinet to keep safe. In 10 years between 2 workstations 3 laptops and 4 external drives. The only drives that have ever gone bad are the Seagates and newer Maxators. I still have 4 Western digital drives that still work and get used in an external case for back up. They have never failed. Seagate should be responsible for data time and mental anguish.

Can I Repartition WD 500GB My Book Firewire Drive w/DATA ON IT?

Greetings.

You will need to have a third party software to achieve this. I recommend norton partition magic. I have been using it in the same scenario as yours and works. they now support firewire. Easy to use and gets the job done.

Hope that helps.
