Ice continuously builds up on lower coil(2 inches on entire coil)

If ice is building up on any type of cooling coil, generally this is an indication that your device is low on freon. If your refrigerator is doing this then you are going to have it serviced by a technician as the ability to do it at home is limited. Generally the home owner does not have the tools or equipment to service a refrigerator. Do it soon before you loose all of your freon, and thus your freezer/refrigerator contents.

Side by Side GE Refrigerator freezer will not defrost which allows frost/ice to build up. I have cleaned all the areas behind the unit as well as under the unit. After I manuely defrost the freezer it...

The defrost circuit has failed in your fridge. Typical failure is with the defrost heating element. To troubleshoot, you need to remove the remove the contents of your freezer section and remove the freezer back panel to access the evaporator coil. You will need a hair dryer to melt the ice on coil. The heating element is attached to the coil. Use a meter to confirm that the element is bad. Hope this helps you.

Ice building up in freezer

Due to the frosting up, The glass defrost heater broke. Any good tech knows this happens. The defrost heater must be replaced. If this is a GE side by side. The new replacement heater has dual elements. The standard heater that was put in them, was not large enough to defrost the coils fully. Replace heater and you should be fixed up. I would also replace the thermostat while you are in the freezer section they are only like 15 bucks and this way you will have a new defrost circuit.

Ice keeps building up on coils

We had the same problem with our GE frig, a Profile 24. When the tech came out, he explained that the energy efficient models have only 1 defrost heater, but the older units had 2 and the hook up and mounting positions were still there. As long as I directed him to install the 2nd heater he could do it. It turned out the original heater was just fine, so the replacement was installed in the 2nd heater space and it has worked fine for several years now. Before doing this on yours, I would verify that the defrost timer is working and the heater unit is ok.
