Question about Empire GWT-25 Wall Mounted Panel Heater

Open Question

For the past three years, none of the various repair people have said that the thermostat is the problem. They usually end up hitting the reset switch and leave us with a bill. It works until it switches off and it will not switch back on again without hitting the reset button again. Since the manual (below)suggests that something with the venting may be causing it to shut off, we should probably ask Randy to look at that first. If the manual switch is defective, we should contact the manufacturer and find out if they have a history of this and if it can safely be swapped out or if the whole thing has to be replaced. Please help us with this problem ans suggest various solutions. Thanks!

SOURCE: Heater doesn't start.

Check the length of your thermostat wire. Mine was about 10ft and I experienced the same problem. Reduced it to 6 and the problem was fixed.

Where is the thermostat?

Top radiator hose, one end goes to the radiator, the other end goes to the thermostat housing at the top front of the engine, three bolts to undo to remove the housing and access the thermostat. If you remove the radiator cap and suck out the coolant from the top of the core then none will be spilled when the thermostat housing is removed.

I have a whirlpool undercounter model # MH3184XPS-2 an has no power

On this model, this is usually a blown fuse or thermostat.

This model has three fuses, a 20A, a 4A, and a .25A and three cavity thermostats.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

mini_manual_behind_grille_small.jpgdee77f7.jpgAt our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Accessing the cavity thermostats for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

If for some reason you don't still have yours, you can download Whirlpool owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

If none of the fuses or thermostats are blown, then the problem is probably on your control circuit board, which is especially common if you recently had trouble with your cooktop lights or exhaust fans.

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid with a one year guarantee.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

The hi limit thermostat probably tripped during self clean. It can be manually reset. Turn off the power and remove the grill under the control panel. There is a two wire switch behind the door latch press in the red button on the switch. Reassemble and turn on the power. If it works you can reset the cooling fan to run longer which could cure your problem. Press and release upper broil button, press and release the up arrow, then hold down the broil button until it reads COOL 000. Press the up arrow until it reads COOL 200. Press cancel. Done.

You probably have a bad compressor. It's internal parts are held up with 4 springs and one of them has probably broken and causes the compressor piston to hit the side of the comp. housing. This will happen when the ref. shuts off. To be sure, if you turn the ref off at the controls then you should hear the noise in the back. If it is less than 5 years old you can get it replaced under warranty. if more than 5 years old it will just be noisy. it will most likely last several more years like it is. Let me know if I'm right.
