After your pool filters on the "backwash" setting, you should move it to the "rinse" setting. With the pump off, set valve to rinse. Start pump and operate for about 1/2 to 1 minute. This ensures that all dirty water from backwashing is rinsed out of the filter to waste, preventing possible return to the pool. Stop pump, set valve to "filter", and start pump for normal filtering. If it still won't start, check for restrictions in the intake and discharge lines.

Pump is blowing cloudy water back into pool

Cloudy water is the bane of sand filters!. I suggest letting filter run day and night. Do not backwash until the pressure rises 8 - 10 pounds above clean starting pressure. Do not try to vacuum or stir up the sediment. when water clears, vacuum to waste. Keep the hose running while vacuuming. A dirty filter is a better filter (up to a point). At a higher pressure the filter will trap more of the fine particles that are clouding your water.

Just installed a hayward pump and followed directions on the pump having problems when we tried to backwash it shoots sand into the pool

Backwash should put no water back into the pool. It should be sending filter dirt to a waste line. Maybe your lines are incorrectly installed?
Secondly, under normal conditions, sand does not go to backwash waste either. Could there be too much sand in the filter?

Reduced circulation/backwash (sand filter)

check your pool pump by putting the valve in recirculate mode.If flow is a problem it may be a clogged impeller.

No water coming out when I backwash. I cleaned

water level must be about the discharge (eyeball) in the pool to back wash. Check the hose connections to make sure that hoses off the the filer head are going to the right place Look for the words "Pump" , "pool" and "waste" molded into the valve. I've seen it a number of times where "Pump" and "pool" were connected the wrong way.

Out of the ground pool-hayward sand filter

This one is easy...
You simply fill your pool to the normal level which is at the top of the skimmer.
Now apply the "Shock" treatment to begin clearing the water.
With the pool full, attach the hose for back flushing to the filter 'Outlet" or discharge side and then move the selector handle to the "backwash" position and turn the pump on. It will begin discharging water out of the hose. Run it this way until it begins sucking air.
You have now "backwashed" your filter.
Fill the pool back to the normal level and finish treating water to get the Ph and Chlorine right.
Enjoy swimming.
