Any time you are upgrading the Firmware the light should flash red/orange, when complete the light will come solid green. Serial connections are very slow, you can do the upgrade via the Parallel port which is faster. I would not use the Ethernet port. If the upload is interrupted you could corrupt the main board which will require replacement. Firmware should only be upgraded if there is an issue to be overcome.
