Question about Brother Sewing Machines

1 Answer

I have a PC 6000 sewing machine, with intermittent problem of taking 2-3 stitches and then the feed dogs just bounce up and down and won't feed the fabric. I've returned it to the dealer twice and he cannot reproduce the problem. Now, it occurs more frequently and doesn't feed properly. Should I take it in again a third time and try to get it fixed? What will be the approx cost to repair? My dealer is not very helpful. It's just a large paper weight now, but I'd like to get it fixed it it doesn't cost too much.

Call Brother, at 1-877-276-8437 and ask them if there is another authorized service center. It sounds like you are trying to do what you are supposed to by taking it in but your repair person is not very good.
Good luck, I hope that they are able to help you. They need to be aware of that particular dealer not taking care of the the customer.

My sewing machine wont RUN. The needle goes up and down but the material wont move along.

under the foot around the needle, there should be two rows of what look like teeth, these pull the material through and there will be an adjustment mechanism on the machine. Try leaving the foot up while you run the machine, you should see the teeth going up and down; if they are it is most likely just a case of setting up the amount of pull. I think it is adjusted with the wheel that sets the length of stitch.

I have an Elna 3210 and my feed dog won't raise anymore. How do I fix this?

When you drop the feed dogs they drop instantly. When you raise them it takes 1-2 stitches for them to com back up. Move the switch on the back to the up position and sew a couple of stitches.

My Janome Harmony 1017 won't sew all the zigzag stitches. Stitches 5,7 and 8 bog down after just two or three stitches because the fabric isn't moving through the machine. Any suggestions?

when the fabric does not move then the feed dogs under the needle plate need to be checked to see if there up or down.
if the feed dogs are down then the lever or switch needs to be pushed up into the correct position
if the feed dogs are up & they are not moving the fabric like there suppose to, cause it's there job to move the fabric against the presser foot,, then they need to be check

the gears that do the zig zag stitches should be checked to make sure there not worn & weather they might need be be greased

I have a Bro PE 400 D. The feed dogs do not seem to be pulling the fabric through without me pulling on it. Stitches are very small even when put on a longer stitch. Embroidery Unit works fine.

check the feed dogs under the needle plate to see if there up or down
if there down then the feed dog switch need to be moved to the up position
but if there up,,,then the machine needs to be serviced so the feed dogs & stitches can be checked

Machine sews in place.

Could be the feed dogs are not advancing the fabric. First check to insure that your stitch length is adjusted correctly. Also insure that the clutch wheel is tightened (little wheel inside the big wheel). If stitch length is set to 1 or 0 (darning setting) this is your problem. If the stitch length is correct then rotate the machine by hand and watch the feed dogs to insure that they are moving in an elliptical pattern and rising above the throat plate. If the feed dogs are not moving then the hex screws securing the connecting rod that connects the feed dog mechanism to the drive shaft may have worked loose. If this is the case the timing will need to be readjusted and the screws tightened.

Have Viking 990 and feed dogs not working. Local repair man kept for over a month and then said it was the circuit board and that Viking no longer making circuit board for 990-- or, that machine can't be...

Is it that the feed dogs won't go up and down, or that you can't adjust the stitch length? If the feed dogs won't go up and down after you have released the feed dog button and cycled the handwheel one revolution, than there is a mechanical adjustment needed. I the stitch length can't be ajdusted, that It's either a circuit board of a step motor problem. The repair shop should be able to tell you that they swaped the feed motor with the zig zag motor to test this issue.

I have a Kenmore 14 stitch sewing machine that I haven't used in years - when I try to use it, the thread and bobbin thread seems to catch and it won't sew forward

take out the thread and bobbin. run the machine with the pressure foot up and watch the feed dogs (toothy things under the pressure foot that move the material through the machine). if they are not rising up above the plate, then you are sewing multiple stitches in one place and that's what spools up the threads. take the plate over the feed dogs off (it just pops up). get someone to remove the two screws holding the feed dog on (it's a torx #10). the piece the feed dogs was screwed to rides up and down on a short piece of polished rod under it. the rod has gummed up to its bearing. bright light, look for this and get some oil (3in1) on the rod above the bearing and force the feed dog mount up and down until it frees up.

The embroidery carriage automatically lowers the feed dogs when put in place

Fabric doesn't advance

Have you checked your feed dog position? The fabric will not advance if the feed dogs are in the down position. For the machines which don't have the raise/lower feed dog capability, there is a plate that covers the feed dogs and must be removed to advance the fabric when sewing.
