If it is actually booting into Vista, it sounds like maybe you have a stuck key. Turn the computer off and press every key a few times and see if any of them feel "stuck". Even if they don't, pressing them may have released any sticking they had. I would try that first.

Hi, first of all have you tried to run the diagnostics just to ensure the hardware functionality of your computer? if not, here's how: As the computer boots, press when the Dell Splash Screen appears. When the Boot menu appears, highlight the Boot to Utility Partitionoption, or the Diagnostics option and then press to start the 32-bit Dell Diagnostics. Press the key to highlight Test System Press to continue to 32-bit Diagnostics. Note: Express Test is the only test that will not require user involvement.
If there's no error found, that means, that your hardware most esp the hard drive (HDD) that came with your system is perfectly working fine and this isolated your issue that it's the operating system problem. It's good to know that you attempted to rebuild the OS just make sure it's the recovery cd that came with the computer. try to boot from the OS cd once again and reload / reinstall Vista. I have a Dell-Inspiron Laptop 1526 I had my hard drive replace by Dell once this year already, when I turn on the computer it starts to work and then stop Running Vista my warranty was up Sept 3 2009 like...

Your trying to downgrade this means you have to use vista cd to format the hard driver, and after the laptop restart, load the Xp. Also sometimes this code comes if you donot use the original xp windows.

Thanks for using Fixy

Dell vostro 1400 laptop won't start b/c BOOTMGR is compressed....

okok, bootmgr is what, as you may be able to guess controls the booting of your computer. the solution is simple. Get out the vista installation cd that came from dell (It DOES come with your computer) and put it in. Next, boot your computer nd you see the familiar DELL screen with a bar that loads, in the upper right, there is a thing that says F12: Boot Menu. Press F12 on your keyboard, the top should now say Loading Boot Menu or something like that. After it loads, you will see a simple list. Navigate to CD/DVD or whatever it calls the disc. You computer will now read the disc and load. Wait for it to finish. It will take you to a screen where you enter some settings. Look for the link that says "repair my pc" (you may have to enter some settings and click next first). Click the link. It will ask you to automatically fix error. Click yes and let it do its thing. If this does not work, repeat the process above, except instead of letting it automatially fix error, CLICK NO! Then it should load a option saying windows vista bla bla bla. Click that and let it repair. Now the problem should be fixed

Laptop says that the driver is missing.

If the computer was "new" and was shipped with Vista installed, the manufacturer probably "designed" the computer for Vista, and did not create/include device-drivers for Windows XP.
So, trying to install XP will not work.

So, insert the Microsoft Vista CD-ROM (the one shipped with the computer, not a CD-ROM purchased from a retail store, nor borrowed from a friend), and boot from it, and reinstall Vista.

What manufacturer/model of laptop? Some manufacturers will ship you a set of CDs/DVDs to replace the ones that were shipped with the new computer.

Window cd

Hi,
The windows vista DVD that you have is an OEM and not a retail windows vista copy. If your friends computer is a non dell system, you would not be able to install it on his computer in the first place. If its a dell computer purchased before 2007 , it will not install.
In all other conditions it would install without any problems

Thanks

Error 2200 for dell 962 printer

you might try going to the system restore on you computer and restore to an earlier time when your printer was functioning. it should at least reassign your drivers. I wouldn't try to update/upgrade until your printer is restored.
