This generally means the bag is full, or pores in bag are clogged with fine dust. First, replace bag, Check the afterfilter located under the tool holder on the back top of the machine. If it's dirty, replace or remove.
Detach the hose and turn on the vacuum. If it comes on, place hand over intake. If the vacuum continues running, it's an indication there's a clog in the hose. If it shuts off, the most likely problem is the "control valve assembly" (inside the vacuum) that's connected to the dial on top of the vacuum. You can try turning the dial so the large dot is lined up with the arrow. This may or may not help. Try turning vacuum on again.
If it still doesn't turn on, the "CVA" is probably worn out and needs replaced. The part can only be purchased at an authorized Aerus store and I highly recommend letting their service person replace/repair it. To locate the shop nearest you, go to the following site and enter your zip code.

Using generic bags increases the chances of the CVA wearing out before it should. If the bag doesn't say "Home Solutions" on it, it's not the genuine article.

My vaccum is about 1 yr old and has very little suction, in addition the sweeper is not working

You probably have a broken belt on the beater bar (sweeper) or a string/rope caught in into to cause it not to turn. Last option if it is a cannister type, that the electrical connection in the hose are not connected to the beater-bar unit well.

If suction is bad, you may have a full bag (replace with a fresh one). Alternatively, you may have a clog somewhere along the hose or just inside the unit.

You did not put the belt on its proper place that's why it happen. Replace again the belt and put it not over the metal part. Put a mark where the belt belong so that you'll remember it when you gonna instal the belt. A mark like pen or masking tape will do.
Thanks for asking.

take the vacuum head off the end of the tube , turn the machine and place your hand over the end of the tube
if it sucks your hand onto the tube , the machine is working as a vacuum machine
then check fro a blockage in the elbow section near the head
if there is no vacuum , junk it and get a new one

Your belt may be twisted inside-out. Be sure the printed marks on the belt face away from the pulleys and shaft. The printing should face you.
