My WD My Book Essential 1TB External is not showing up on 'My Computer'. It was working perfectly in the morning, then when I rebooted my machine it no longer showed up.

disconnect your WD ext HDD. and reboot your computer. then connect again. if still not showing. go to device manager (right click my computer then properties -- click device manager). expand by clickin "Disk drives" category here it will show all the hard drives installed in your computer including your WD ext HDD . if you see yellow sign on your external drive right click and remove then go to Action menu click on Scan for hardware. it should detect and install the driver again. if still the same or maybe its not on the list of Disk drives.. try to change another USB cable .. i hope this will help

My WD hard drive shows up on windows explorer but when I click on the icon it states that I need to format the drive in order to read it. I have loads of precious data on this hard drive. How can I...

I had the same problems with mine. It got to the point that the drive wouldn't even spin up all the time. I got lucky one day, and it did spin up & I was able to get my data off the drive. Counting this unit, it is my fourth WD HDD failure! Needless to say, there are no more WD drives in my house!! Are you plugged into a "native" USB port? Try that if you are using a hub. Also try unplugging the USB cord into the unit and plugging it back in again alternating with turning it on and off using the big button on the front. It isn't just a HDD in a case. There is a weird electronics board inside that connects and controls the drive. NOT a regular IDE or SATA connection, so you can't just take it out and hook it up using an IDE to USB and power supply to get your data off. Do other USB accessories run OK on your USB ports? Sometimes THEY get strange and won't work or won't work correctly. Disconnect the "My Book" USB cord, shut your computer off, pull the power cord completely out of your computer, press the start button on your computer for 5 seconds. Put the power cord back in, start your computer and reconnect the USB to the My Book. Doing the above will usually fix the USB ports that have gotten corrupted for whatever the reason. You might also try running it on another computer and see if you get the same results. Hope any of this will help. Let me know if it does, and please rate me accordingly. Good luck....I know all too well what it is like to loose data.

My Mac will not store data on my wd external hard-drive

Take it back to where you bought it, and get a replacement,
or at least get them to demonstrate that it _does_ work, when connected to a Mac computer (not a Windows computer).

WD 500Gb HDD not showing up in my computer, etc

Maybe the best thing to do is,
1) Remove WD External while pc is switched off
2) Reboot into windows
3) Doenload Ccleaner > http://www.homepc-security.co.uk/Downloads%20&%20Tutorials.html Then install.
4) Make sure you have Cleaner highlighted on the left near the top. Then put cheque marks in all boxes except, Windows Size/Location Cache, User assist History & Wipe Free Space then click Run Cleaner. Once you have repeated the step of running Run Cleaner till nothing else appears, then select the Registery cleanerthen click Scan For Issues and delete all that you find there also. Turn off pc, remove power cord then push the on button to discharge the pc, then plug in the WD Hard drive via a diffrent usb port, and boot up pc. I hope this works for you.

I've been using my WD external for a while with no issues. Yesterday turned it on and it isn't recognised by any of my computers, is there anyway of fixing this without losing data?

If your PC will recognize the drive and give it a drive letter, you can run chkdsk (Check Disk) from the Run prompt to verify that the drive does not have damaged sectors. many times chkdsk will fix minor errors allowing you to access the drive again.
Click Start, Run CMD, enter, then type: X: (X being the drive letter of the Seagate) then type chkdsk /r and hit enter. If it completes 100% try accessing the drive again.
If you cannot acquire a drive Letter when you plug in the WD External try going to Disk Management and assigning a drive letter.
Click Start, then Right click on My Computer and click Manage, then click Disk Management. See if your WD drive shows up in the list. If it does, right click on the larger box on the right and see if it will allow you to assign a drive letter.

Another option you may have is taking the hard drive out of the WD External enclosure and either connecting it as a secondary drive in a desktop PC, or installing it into another external enclsure USB device, and try again to access the drive.

If none of these options work, your last option is to contract a Disk Recovery Service to acquire your data. They are usually very expensive.

WD My Book 320GD external HDD - recognized by computer, but cannot read, says it has to be reformatted

Hi,

Sorry to say not that many of the Free ones are either A) Actually free(most just show you the files then request money. or B) Al that good. GetMyDataBack seem reasonably good but any attempts you make to recover or fix the drive run the risk of further damaging files.

Both of your stated problems sound like file structure problems although the later problem sounds like the issue may have been the result of impending hardware failure.

First, IF you cannot afford to loose your data, DO NOT try the following suggestions and send the drive immediately to a data recovery specialist(I recommend Armor-IT in North America, if you're elsewhere give me Region and City and I'll point you to an appropriate location).

Now, IF you can live without you files in the event this causes new damage and are simply looking for a cheap/free shot at salvaging the data, open your start menu and click RUN(XP)/SEARCHBAR(Vista). Type CHKDSK X: /F and hit enter(change X to the current drive letter of the external drive).

Then reboot your computer, a screen will come up about disk checking or consistency check, allow it to run it's course.

If this fails, try GetMyDataBack, it's free and can resolve some minor issues. If these suggestions do not work you will likely need the help of a pro. Respond with your Region and City and I will point you to an appropriate Pro.

When i click my hard drive, it tell me to format it. ????

have you try to connect it to a different computer?

if yes and getting the same problem you need to call your WD for the warranty and replace it. if your up to your files inside your storage i guess they will endorse you to their third party company that will recover your data storage and it will cost a lot.

Cannot retrieve data from my 500G WD

Hi,

For your 2 queries:
1. The clicking sound is indicative of a hardware failure or the start of one. Considering having it fixed would simply be buying a bit of time and prolonging the inevitable.  The drive even when repaired tends to be suspect and would defeat its very purpose;

2. You can perform the reformat yourself. If the WD would show as a removable drive in your Windows Explorer, right clicking on the assigned drive letter would give you the option to Format it.

Alternately, it might be to your advantage to simply replace the WD. In some instances, it is also possible to just replace the actual HD inside the enclosure.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
