I don't have one of these cameras, but here's what they said about the grid feature on cameradigital.com:

Level and Grid Markers With the Level Marker feature, it's easy to keep your camera level for more professional looking video. Line up any horizontal lines in your shot - such as the horizon - to the marker and you can be sure your camcorder is level.

So in the menu, find the Level Marker feature, and turn it off, I think?
All I could find on it, but if you look up the Level Marker feature in your manual, you should find the answer.
Good luck, and hope this helps.

Hi,
The Home Menu gives you a shortcut to all of the different settings and menus that the camera offers. You can select from the shooting, viewing, slide-show, printing, memory and camera settings menus.
To turn off the Grid Display on your Sony HC5,please go to: SETUP options - Shooting Settings 1 Menu: Then choose Grid Lines and select off.
If this doesn't work for you, please comment and let me know, and I will be more than happy to assist you to further resolve your issue. I will appreciate your feedback and positive rating for this solution.
Thank you.

    Hi,

I have looked this up for you again, since we were running into issues. This is what we need to do:

Touch "Menu" --> Select "STANDARD SET Menu" (It has an icon that looks like a small briefcase) --> Select "Guideframe"

Now, press DISPLAY/BATT INFO to turn off the framing grid.

    This will resolve your issue.

A correction about "Now, press DISPLAY/BATT INFO to turn off the framing grid" that I said.

On some newer models of your camera this button has a battery symbol on itself, no label.

Let me know if the solution worked for you though.

Sony HDR-HC5 will not power on. AC adapter is working ok. I have an extra fully charged battery and it does not power the camcorder up either.

This is usually caused by a failed component in the power circuit within the camera. This will require disassembly and trouble-shooting to identify and replace the defective component and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not really a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

Sony HC5 stuck in nightshot

This is most likely a broken or misaligned switch on the internal lens assembly and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

I am having the same problem. My camera will not come on and I have changed the battery. It will not even charge. Does anyone know what is going on with this camera

If you can not power up with charger, your charger may be bad. If you can power up with charger, your camcorder battery terminal may be bad.

In custom setting, assigned the front function button to display framing grid. function button does not respond when pressed. am i missing something here? thanks

Aha! While pressing the fn button, turn the main command dial (the one on the back) to toggle the grid display.

Personally, I like having the grid, and used custom setting #D2 to turn it on the first day I had the D90. This frees the fn button for other, IMO more important things.

My computer does not recognize my Sony hdr Hc5 camcorder. I cannot download my videos. I use firewire. I am using windows xp

Take a look at the firewire port on the camera, you should see four "pins" for lack of a better word. On mine, one of them was bent and I had to use a fine needle to bend it back in place, then presto everything works

Go to manufacture's website. Find the download or support tab. Then look for the very latest drivers for your camera. Then download onto pc, double-click to extract and install the driver, then restart pc, Then turn on camera first, then start any programs you are using, then finally connect with usb/i-link/HD cable.

When pc doesn't recognize a device, it is due to the driver.
