I have a acer laptop ASPIRE5520G .My dvd drive does not appear in my computer folder so that i can't use it. Please give me some advise. Thanks.

Hi,

Below is the steps to resolve the issue:

CAUSE: Software that is not Windows Vista capable (such as printer software, CD burning software, and games) may have modified the registry to cause the optical drive to not function.

RESOLUTION: Method 1: Remove the program that caused the issue: If you know which program might be the cause of the issue or the last program you installed, remove the program.
  1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, click Uninstall a Program.
  3. In the Programs and Features window, click to select the program to remove, and then click Uninstall/Change.
  4. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
  5. Follow all onscreen instructions to complete the removal.
  6. Shut down and restart the computer after removal is complete.
Note: Determine whether the computer is working properly. If the issue is resolved, do not load this software again because it will cause the optical drive not to function again. Instead, contact the software manufacturer for a Windows Vista™ capable version.
If removing the program did not resolve the issue, use System Restore. Method 2: Use System Restore to restore to a date before you installed the third party software.
  1. Close any open programs.
  2. From the Windows Vista™ default Start menu, click All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click System Restore. Note: System Restore can also be opened by typing Start Search keyword: rstrui.
  3. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
  4. In the System Restore dialog box, click Recommended restore, and then click Next.
View Picture Note: If a different restore point is needed, select Choose a different restore point, and then click Next. Select a day and time from the list when the computer was working properly, and then click Next.
    View Picture
  5. In the Confirm your restore point dialog box, click Finish.
    View Picture
  6. In the System Restore dialog box, click Yes. The computer restarts and make the appropriate changes.
    View Picture
  7. After the computer returns to Windows, in the System Restore dialog box, click Close.
    View Picture
Note: Determine whether the computer is working properly. If the issue is resolved, do not load this software again because it will cause the optical drive not to function again. Instead, contact the software manufacturer for a Windows Vista™ capable version. Method 3: If System Restore did not resolve the issue, manually modify the registry.
  1. From the Windows Vista default Start menu, point to All Programs, Accessories, and then click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type: Regedit. Click OK.
  3. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
  4. In the Registry Editor window, locate and then click to select the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
  5. From the File menu, click Export.
  6. In the File name dialog box, type: Savedkey, and then click Save.
  7. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters file, and then from the Edit menu, click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  8. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters file, and then from the Edit menu, click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  9. In the Registry Editor window, from the File menu, click Exit.
  10. Shut down Windows® and restart the computer.

How do I access the hidden partition to reinstall operating system?

Turn on or restart your notebook, then press F11 while your notebook is
starting.
3 Insert the Operating System Recovery CD/DVD when prompted. The System
Recovery program starts.
Click a system recovery option
Full System Restore (Destructive) reformats the hard drive and
restores the system software as it was when you purchased your
notebook. This process deletes your data files.
Full System Restore with Backup (recommended) moves the
contents of the hard drive to the C:\My Backup folder and installs
a new copy of Windows XP. This option saves your existing data
files, but all programs must be reinstalled and the program settings
reconfigured. You need at least 4 GB of hard drive space to use this
restore option.
5 Click Next. The System Restore - Format and Recover dialog box opens.
6 Click Yes. Files are restored to your hard drive. When file recovery has
finished, the System Restore dialog box opens.
7 Click Restart. Your notebook restarts, and Windows finishes its setup and
installation.
Important
After you restore your system, it will
appear with the same files and programs
it had when it shipped from the factory.
You still need to download Windows
updates and antivirus updates to bring
your notebook’s software up to date.
8 Reconnect your Internet cable and all USB peripheral devices. You are
done.
